I moved to the US 4 months ago with a K-1 visa. I got married, I got social security number and applied for adjustment of status and a working permit.

I have just recieved my working permit, however, I don't have a way to identify besides showing my working permit or ssc. How do I open a bank account to be able to deposit my paycheck? How do I get a driver's license?

The DMV here in Aberdeen, NC, told us I would need at least 2 docs showing I am legal. And that my social security card is not enough. My working permit says on the back that this permit does no mean I am a citizen. What defines me as a legal alien otherwise? And How am I supposed to drive to work without a valid license?

Thanks and merry xmas everyone!

Here in Nebraska, Natasha obtained a State ID card (in lieu of a driver's license), using her SS card and her (Russian) passport. The State ID is all she needed to open her own bank account. Just a report of own experiences here in the heartland.

We tried that, the security man said "No, your visa is expired, I need another document", not even knowing what he's talking about.

That is true - they 'need' to have so many days left before the I-94 expires or they won't issue documents. We got her state ID the same day we received her SS card in the mail, and we applied for that about 2 or 3 weeks after she arrived. Not because we're prescient or anything, but because that was the advice we'd read here on VJ.

Your EAD card shows your legal status. The list for NC is similar to all of the other states. In your state, an EAD card (legal presence), marriage certificate (residency), and SS card should meet the list requirements. What you were told does not reflect the list on their website. We got bad info from the local office in Texas and had to go back with their list to show them that my wife met their qualifications.
