Mr. Bush sees his job as providing comfort to those who have sacrificed so much. "The definition of comfort is very interesting. Comfort means hug, comfort means cry, comfort means smile, comfort means listen. Comfort also means, in many cases, assure the parent or the spouse that any decision made about troops in combat will be made with victory in mind, not made about my personal standing in the polls or partisan politics."

Asked where he gets the strength to meet with the families of soldiers whom he - as commnder in chief - sent to their deaths, he turned stern.

"You have to believe in the cause. You have to understand that - and believe we'll be successful. If I didn't believe in the cause, it would be unbelievably terrible. I believe strongly in what we're doing. I believe it's necessary for our security. And I believe history will justify the actions. ...

So as long as he thinks it OK then he can live with his conscience. What a #######!

I suspect people would line up for that.

I wouldn't. On January 20th I just want the guy to go back to Texas, never to be seen again. I have no desire to see physical harm come to him, but neither do I want to see one more bit of attention payed to him after he's out of office. The guy just needs to go away and leave us alone. (sadly, this won't be the case. Someone will ghost-write his autobiography and we'll see him on the morning talk shows hawking it in about 8-12 months.)

Does putting a post in big ####-off font make it more credible?

The only reason I did that was to make the headline stand out and to make the thing a little more readable... as it was rather long winded.

Bush’s Legacy May End Up Better Than You Think: Kevin Hassett

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=was...id=acJBjLS7oKAc

When I read your post this headline I saw today popped in my mind. (although I hadn't read the story yet).

I happen to think his legacy will depend more on what the future hold for us in the middle East.

It's hard to believe if Bushes Fantasy of... "Democracy breaking out all across the Arab world" were to take place in the next ten years... that this would not remove some of the tarnish from his name.

Lets look at another unlikely possibility.

Lets say in the next 4-8 years our country is attacked on the home-front (multiple times) with many lives lost adding to great uneasiness in the American people, while the true Bush haters would never loose the sour taste in their mouth for Bush, I bet many others would.

Bushs biggest problem is, his legacy is shot and no one cares to "massage it" into a more favorable historical place. Obviously Democrats will blame him for everything he is guilty of as well as things he's not guilty of.

Republicans have no reason to try to shine a better light on him because he did so much damage to the party.

Interesting read. Anything is possible, and history frequently judgest people and events differently at a distance.

It's hard to believe if Bushes Fantasy of... "Democracy breaking out all across the Arab world" were to take place in the next ten years... that this would not remove some of the tarnish from his name.

Sure. If "ground zero" of a Democracy swell through the Middle East over the next 10 years could be traced back to Iraq, hell I'd even take back everything I've ever said about the man's foreign policy. But the chances of even Iraq winding up with a functioning Democracy (as opposed to a sham Democracy like Pakistan) is so remote that what I really hope to see 10 years from now is simply a functioning and stable Iraqi government of any sort that isn't hostile to the West. I think that's the best we can hope for. Domestically, as the article says, is a different story. There's simply no possible way he's going to escape the harsh judgment of history on domestic issues.

Lets look at another unlikely possibility.

Lets say in the next 4-8 years our country is attacked on the home-front (multiple times) with many lives lost adding to great uneasiness in the American people, while the true Bush haters would never loose the sour taste in their mouth for Bush, I bet many others would.

Well of course every side is going to spin the next attack (because the next attack is a "when" not "if" scenario) according to their own agenda. Right wingers would say it's because Obama is soft on terrorism. Left wingers would say it's because Bush weakened us militarily and diplomatically. The truth will probably be completely different, but that won't matter.

True dat.

Y'know, when Barrack Obama wasn't being forthcoming about his relationship with Bill Ayers, I was pretty vocal about wanting him to come clean about that relationship. I still feel like he hasn't cleared his relationship up with Ayers 100%, and I think the American people deserve the truth, good or bad.

I think it's also fair to ask Bush to come clean on his time in the National Guard. Regardless of how Rather handled that journalistic disaster, there are a LOT of unanswered questions about Bush's service, and Bush has not been forthcoming about this period of his life. I think the American people deserve to know the truth, good or bad. It's not about politics or partisanship, it's about knowing the truth, even if he's only got days left in office.
