Do your parents feel happy about your marriage?

at first when I told my daddy about my husband (this was when me and my hubby were still boyfriend and girlfriend), my dad didn't want me to see him because he was a basketball player and my dad used to be a basketball player so he knew how some players have alot of girls. Haha But then I got pregnant and I didn't know what to do and I was still in medical school at that time. We didn't plan on getting married right away because we didn't want to fall into that cliche where one has to marry the girl because she's pregnant. Then my dad talked to us about getting married. My dad and mom raised us in the united states but instilled in us our filipino values too. So I guess you can say my parents are "old fashioned". But I love them for it. Anyway, since we knew that we were gonna get married in the future anyway, we decided to get married. So after a whirlwind romance, we ended up tying the knot November 18, 2006. One year after we met. And up to this day we're really happy. I love him more than anything.

My parents totally love him now and spoil him more than me. :)

I am sorry about your situation and I hope that with time they will come to understand and accept him. Culture sometimes plays a major role in how people understand one another.

My family has mixed decisions about me marrying my husband, especially since I am considered too young to be married. On the contrary, my husband is uneasy about my college debt that I have incurred but no matter what, we have promised to work together to pay everything off. It will benefit both of us in the end. I have not really had any problems with my husband's family. The accept us. I guess the uneasiness comes from my family because they have never met him in person. My mother had more resentment in the beginning because she wanted me to be very careful about my decision and made me know it by her choice words. Although I listened, I let my heart do the real talking. With time I am sure things will get better.

I am not sure how everyone's parents feel about international marriage.

I married USC and he has been a wonderful person. BUT, he is from a family which is very different from

my family. I grew up in Japan and my parents are very hardworking and supported me to get education in the US.

They paid for my education in the US( undergraduate)

and also they always save money and organize things for the future.

I lived with my grand parents and great grand mother. We all lived together and shared.

My dad worked so hard to get his career and my mother works held her own career as an independent woman until recently. My family said education is the most important thing that they can give to their children.

Now, my family grew up with a single mother. She has been divorced twice and has been dating several men.

She could not even pay for his education, but she spends a lot of money on her brand bags and fancy cloths.

His father cannot help financially either.

My parents are very disappointed by my decision to marry my husband. He graduated from really good college. But,

a family as a whole, his family is very different from my family. And my parents are not even planning to come to the US and meet my husband's parents. They did not participate on my small wedding either.

And one time, I was so stressed out by my husband's debts from his college years, My mother told me that if his parents cannot come up with the same amount of money my family comes up, she will not going to help out. It is not just fair.

I totally understand that. It sounds like my husband's parents try to take an advantage of my family.

So, of course we will never be able to get a house or anything.

I started saving my income for our future down payment. Also we are thinking about moving to a different place where things are cheaper.

How are your parents?

My parents HATED the idea of me marrying an Afghan National at first.... I've always been extremely close with them, but during the first 3 months of my and Omar's dating, me and my family barely talked at all.. And all they would tell me over and over again was that there was no way I could trust him and that I was betraying my religion (I'm Christian, he's Muslim). However, after we told them 3 months ago that we were getting married and had started the Visa process they calmed down a LOT. My brother who is Calvinist (in my opinion, a fanatical form of Christianity) still won't acknowledge that I'm getting married..

Overall, since we started the visa process, the rest of my family has totally supported me and things are getting back to normal now. I just want things to be as easy for Omar as possible. He's never been really close with his family (in fact he hasn't even told them he's getting married because he says they will try to force him into marriage with a Muslim girl over there), so we are both just hoping that my family will become like a new start and a new family for him :)

P.S. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!

I'm marrying a hillbilly bird, and my old mum is totally mortified. See, mum's an old fashioned, gentile type (refers to unmarried couples disparigingly as "living over the brush" and that kind of old school stuff) and when I took her to a hick town in rural Southern Illinois, she went into shock!

Of course, 'er indoors is as poor as a church mouse, has two kids from a previous marriage, and can't have any more (which is devastating for mum, as she's desperate for Grandchildren) so when you tot up all the points, I can safely say she's distraught about the whole thing!

Meh.............

We had a hard time with my parents too when we announced that we wanted to get married. My parents said cruel things just to break our relationship but in the end it made us all stronger.

I think what really bothers my family is that I am moving far away and they are scared of never seeing their grandchildren (which won't be alive for another 4 years at least) which they are desperate to have soon.

We have a huge college debt from his side too which my parents don't know about. I don't think they need to as it is our business and we will take care for it together. And we are confident we will have paid it all back in 5-7 years. I am proud of what we have accomplished with my parents. Now they love him to pieces. My dad smokes cigares with him and drinks together. My mom calls him her 'American son'. He even got the biggest chocolate plate for christmas ! (I am jealous) And they just see that he is doing all he can for us and our future together and that I am happy.

Relax, I can tell you I never thought my family would calm down but now everything is fine. Just prove them that this is right and that you two are strong.

Both my husband's father and my father passed away when we were young, but both our mothers were still alive until after we were married.

The last time we saw my Mom before she died, she talked to my husband about what a wonderful daughter I was and my husband reassured her that he would take care of me for the rest of my life. She looked so at peace that day, and it was the last time we saw her.

My husband's mother seemed to approve of our marriage, even though none of our family could understand the "internet dating concept". She has since passed away as well.

Honestly my parents are very negative about me moving so far away from them!!! Even if this is not first time I go to States and for long time.....They never met my fiance and they even don't speak or understand any english, this being a big obstacle between our families.... I am excited about my soon marriage but makes me sad at the same time when I know how they feel about this.

I hope that after i will get to states they will see me being happy and doing well so they will not worry so much anymore!

Wish you luck everyone!!!

My family thinks my wife is just wonderful. They're happy that I've found love and I think they're secretly pleased I moved to the US where you can more easily live a comfortable life. They're sad I'm so far away but they get a nice place to visit on vacation.

My wife's family, on the other hand, HATE me. We've had nothing but trouble from her (adult) children and the very first thing her Dad said to me when I first met him and asked for her hand in marriage was to tell me that he thought her ex-husband was the greatest man who ever lived (no paraphrasing). Welcome to the family!

:wow: Seriously? Sounds like he's a moron...

My mother passed away long before I met my husband, and my Dad wasn't exactly thrilled that I moved so far away. He likes my husband a lot though, and they use hand and feet and bits and pieces in German and English and communicate just fine now. My Dad used to come visit once or twice a year, but now he's getting too frail for the long flight...

My husbands was never very close to his parents, and they very much disliked his ex-wife, so lucky me got very warmly accepted into the family. We are seeing them way more often now than he used to before, which is nice.

OMG!! Seriously, what a #######!!!!!! Yeah, he was so great that his daughter divorced him!!!!! I get grief from 'er indoors' ex in-laws. It particularly annoys me when her ex's mum still refers to herself as "mother-in-law" but there ya go.

Fortunately, everyone from my family and my hunny's family are in total support. They're even super excited for us. I'm very grateful for that.

I believe things will work out between your and his family. Just stay in love and everyone will see that they are very wrong to negatively judge your union. As the corny but ever so true saying goes... LOVE CONQUERS ALL!

Good luck and God bless!

PS: My sister (we're Catholics) married an Indian (Hindu) and they had/have no problem whatsoever, so my mom and dad eventually accepted and supported the relationship. And because of the growing family bond, my brother-in-law submitted (by his own free choice) to be baptized into Catholicism. ^_^
