Out of status???

Hi!! I am trying t o understand this "out of status". So you are out of status when your visa expires right?? But if you send your AOS papers does that mean you are in status agian or are you "out of status" until you get your green card? I came here on a j1 visa and my visa expired in July 25, I filed my AOS on August 8. I got my AP document and want to go home, however I want to be clear on the note that is on the document that says that if you have been out of status for more that 180 days you might be denied entry at POE. SO I am trying to understand when you are out of status... any thoughts??

You would be out of status if your visa expired and you hadn't fulfilled the requirements, such as a K-1 not getting married before the I-94 expired.

Since you're adjusting status from a visa other than K1 and you overstayed it, the best thing would be not to travel until you get your green card instead of using your AP. The reason for that is that an officer at POE when you get back may not let you back in since you overstayed your J1 visa.
