We're going to Chris' coworker's house for Christmas Eve dinner. I asked last night if I could help with anything (booze, wine, food, dessert) and she said no. I asked again and she said a side dish would be good then. I said okay but now I don't know what to bring. She is cooking a turkey with the usual potatoes, stuffing and rolls.

Also, what is an appropriate hostess gift?

I need ideas. :help:

PS: I'm not a good cook, so please something simple but tasty.

How about a greenbean casserole? Easy, quick, and most people love it!

Why not buy something pre-made and put it in a pan and pretend you made it. When people ask for the recipe say it's a family secret :P

Chris would sell me out for an extra slice of pecan pie.

come on Amby you must have something simple and not "pretentious"? ;)

appropriate hostess gifts are a box of chocolates or a bottle of nice wine. Neither of which are expected to be opened while you're there, so don't be offended if she hoards them for herself later. ;)

You could always make some poutine and tell them it is a traditional Canadian Christmas dish!

Or how about just take some Christmas crackers? Most Americans have no idea what they are, but if you have a World Market near you they have them for sale there. And some other specialty stores. Someone last year I think mentioned Pier One or something like that.

I've been buying our crackers at TJ Maxx for years. They seemed to have a larger batch of them this year than ever before. Makes sense really since they've got TK Maxx across the pond.

As far as the food goes, you could take a cheese ball and the appropriate crackers (the edible kind!). Fine gift shops usually sell packets of spices that can be made up into dips or balls and are really quite yummy. Ask about their most popular sellers.

I made this for a Thanksgiving get together and it was quite a hit:

corn casserole

I also have a recipe for an excellent cheeseball that I make every year at holiday time but I have the recipe in my head and I'll have to think about amounts, let me know if you want me to write it out :)
