:help: Are there any Veterans out there who successfully added there wife/husband as a dependent before they(the dependent) received a social security nunber? I'm getting a very delayed responce from the VA after submitting my paperwork over 1 month ago,to add my foreign husband as my dependent. Thanks in advance for all replies

What type of benefit? The Va has different applications and procedures depending on the benefit you are seeking.

Is your husband still in South Africa? If so he may not qualify as a dependant until he enters the USA. My wife and daughter living in the Philippines don't qualify for tax purposes no would they qualify for survivors benefits until they are actually in the USA.

Hello, My wife and I got married 2 yrs ago. I was on a tourist visa so I dont qualify for a SSN number then yet. We received paperwork for adding me as her dependent but it seemed the SSN was needed so we thought I can't be added yet but when we filed it, everything went through and I managed to get a military ID.

I have a SSN listed on my ID and when I asked about it, they said that its required to have a SSN listed so they just put some random numbers on mine.

Wow, I think pretty much everything in DEERS is tied to SSN--unless the dependent is under a certain age and then they are tied to your SSN.

Sorry this isn't much help but getting a SSN for my family was #1 on the list of things to do AFTER we got married.

Daniel had added me on his life insurance as the beneficiary long before I got my visa but could not add me on any thing else.

After I moved here, I got the dependants card with just a temp SSN (random numbers they put) coz I still did not have my SSN.

OOOHH I wish I had read this post before I posted!! How long was the ID card good for?
