Travel after Green Card Expiration

Hi,

we filed our I-751 Form, got my biometrics taken and received a letter that my green card is extended for one more year. The original expiration date is at the end of January. I am going to leave the country for Christmas for two weeks and then again after my green card expires. If I bring the letter that states my green card is extended for one year, is that enough proof so I won't get in trouble at the customs to re-enter the USA?

7-7-06 - Recieved NOA1 for all 3 applications

7-26-06 - Biometrics scheduled and completed (for both EAD and AP)

9-18-06 - RFE Mailed. Need translated Birth C.

10-9-06 - RFE Sent back in, Case touched.

10-31-06 - AP and EAD Approved!

*1-23-07 - Interview Date! (received in mail on 12/4/06)

Why is it risky for him/her to leave the country with the letter that allows him to travel? It is, after all, good for one year.

you will be fine with your expired green card and the extension letter - it extends the validity of your green card by one year. US border officials are familiar with the extension letter so you shouldn't have any difficulties. If you are really worried that the country where you are going won't let you board the plane then make an infopass at your local USCIS office and get an I-551 stamp put into your passport (if you can get it - they may not give it since you already have the NOA). Enjoy your travels.

I don't think some of the replies understand the post.

He has an extension letter thats expiring next month (Jan 09). For your Christmas trip you would be ok, but the second trip, i would advice you to make an info pass appointment and have your passport stamped before you take that second trip in January.

You can go to the USCIS website and schedule an info pas appointment and have your passport stamped.

Well, the way I understand it is that he has a Green card that is going to expire on January 2009. Since he has an extension letter he should be OK to travel for a year. Expired Green card + extension letter.
