Hello everybody!!

I did what others want me to do today about going back to the SS OFFICE for follow-up of my application since it has been 1 month and 3 days of waiting. Im saddened by the fact that until NOW the immigration haven't updated my case yet and replace my surname to my married surname.. cos thats the only reason why the SSA couldn't do nothing with regards to my application...SIGH****i couldn't apply for JOB..im aware though that there are many people right now who are losing there job, feel bad about that..

Is there anyone out there who had been on the same case like mine? what did you do?

Best of luck to all of us!!

I'm sorry you didn't get your card. :( Do you already have an EAD? That should be enough for an employer to hire you if you explain the situation with the SSA. If you have not received an EAD, you can not work with just your social security card. When a K1 holder receives their social security card it is printed with "only valid for work with additional USCIS documentation" or something like that. My husband came here on a K-1 and has his social security card already.

See my timeline for my K-1 and AOS/EAD/AP details.

sorry to hear that! I dunno.. I think all we could do in this strange place is to wait. Haven't had same problem with you though. I got my SSN 7 days after I filed and it's directly to my married name.

Maybe you should keep on calling first before going to save gas?

Hi there!!

thank you so much for the insight..Yeah i already got my EAD last nov.14 and went to SS office on the 16, and until now immigration didn't change my surname to married name..In my got my married name.

You are right probably i could apply for a job, but the one am applying for it needs the last 4 digits of SSN and couldn't filled it up. My case was been transferred also to CSC last september 18, and when i checked it online, was last updated oct.8,2008..so right now i dunno whats next to do..i might call probably..

Thanks again...Merry X'mas!!

We are both on the same situation. It frustrates me so much so I did not go back to SSA since then and now it got me worried because I am scheduled for my interview on January 21, 2009 and I still dont have my SS number. My husband could not add me to his bank account, insurances and could not get a drivers license and the State Id too because they always ask for SS#. I am worried as to what else would I show as a proof of our legal marriage because I dont have those documents.

Anybody there who has ideas? Thanks and I would appreciate any help from you. To Sally, I hope you can get it soon.

If you have proper documentation that permits you to work in the USA (EAD), it is illegal for an employer to not hire you on the grounds that you have no SSN. You can still work without a SSN as long as you have applied for a SSN (the SSN office should have given you a receipt proving that you applied). I worked here last summer on a J-1 and I had to fight my employer to hire me because of this. Google: working without a SSN and/or chekc out these sites:

hello... maybe my experience can help for clarification....

I got my SS# a week after I arrived to US and it was in my maiden name yet, as we were not married during that time. ANd then applied for a change of name afterwards. It will be the same SS# you will have when you apply even if you had a change of name. If you already have your EAD card, then is the time that they can issue you the new SS card with same SS# but only different name. In my case, when i went to the SS office, immigration still hasn't updated my records to my married name, but since I have the EAD (work permit in hand that has my updated married name in it, they have accepted it and sent me my new SS card with same SS# that I obtained with my maiden name in it.

Irregardless, when I got hired for a job, which i'm thankful for since only 3 days after I got my EAD, I got an interview and got hired after a week, I told my employer that the SS card that I have still shows my maiden name as the SS office still has to send me the updated card and it usually takes them 30 days (but in my case it took only two weeks).

As long as you have valid work permit, you should be good to go... You only need the SS#, regardless if the name on the SS card shows up as your maiden name or the married name.

If it would also help, I requested the SSA office if they can provide a certification for me stating my SS# and my name in it for employment purposes while they wait for Immigration to update my records then... and they obliged right away... That certification is what I presented my employer when I got hired and just told my employer that I'm just waiting for SSA office to mail me the actual card with my updated married name. Just recently, i've been working for more than a month now and my employer's HR just followed up with me if i received the new card and so i faxed in a copy to my employer's HR as promised. One thing is for sure, that didn't keep me from getting hired nor start to look for a job.

Hey

My wife was in the same position. We went to the social security office and asked for a "certified print out" of her social security request. The print out will have your number and government stamp. This print out can be used for your job interviews until you get your social security card in the mail.
