Rebeccajo, those are pretty harsh words for such a sweet family.

Define 'sweet'.

Is it because they are Christian?

If they didn't make Christianity such a big part of their appeal, would their story play so well? I kind of doubt it.

And no, I'm not an atheist or a Christian-hater. But I do find it extremely distasteful when people parlay their faith (whatever it may be) into their 'image'.

If these people played the same story out in the media but made absolutely no mention of their religious affiliation, I think the public perception of them would be quite different. And the bottom-line truth with these parents is they are using their children for financial gain. I find it disgusting.
