I just realized I've never given this topic any real thought.

I have.. I knew I didn't want to marry a doctor, a police man, fire man etc or a truck driver... I wanted to marry someone who had a Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 job...

I grew up with a dad for a truck driver and I just knew I didn't want to do that to my kids

I don't blame you there. This is a job for someone who is single, married in the visa process or a person who hates their spouse!

I think my dad loves being a truck driver.. not that he likes to spend that much time away from his family but I think he likes the freedom of it.. he would hate being tied to a desk in an office...

his schedule now isn't as bad as when we were growing up.. then he would be gone all week and Saturday he would spend the day working on his truck and Sunday he slept all day :P now he is home a few times during the week...

Just thought about my post...didn't mean to imply that he hated your Mom! I don't know how people retire form this job. I have three years under my belt and I'm itching to get the he!! out! There is a certain allure to not being tied down though.

HAL and Marilyn: Thanks. I miss my mom a lot. Although I've become somewhat accustomed to her being gone, there's a moment every now and then when I think, "Hey! Mom would like to know about that!"

I want to do anesthesiology soooooooo...I'll hook you up with all the surgeries

We'll see if that's stil what I want to do once I get to med school. My mom told me most people change their mind and pick another specialty.

You do realize that anesthesiologists have the largest malpractice insurance premiums, right? They pay even more than an OB/GYN and surgeons. The reason is that it's extremely easy to screw up their job. Too much or too little can do horrible things. Patients have reported "being awake" during a surgical procedure and unable to move or speak (but can feel all the pain) due to general anesthesia. Some die because of an overdose or have an allergic reaction. The anesthesiologist is blamed for the problem (even if it wasn't his or her fault), since it was their responsibility.
