It is being called the snowiest December that Las Vegas has ever seen. Officially, 3.6 inches of snow was recorded.

The winter storm dumped more than a foot of fresh snow at the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort on Mt. Charleston.

The National Weather Service says this is the most snow Southern Nevada has seen in nearly 30 years and it caused some major problems.

The Clark County School District has closed schools for Thursday. Students and teachers do not have to report to school, but the district says all administrators, 12-month employees, and office staff should report to work as usual. Nye County schools are also closed.

very limited amount of flights are taking off and landing at McCarran International Airport due to poor visibility. Many flights from around the country headed to Las Vegas are being kept on the ground until the weather improves.

Southwest, United and Westjet cancelled all flights in and out of McCarran Wednesday evening. You can check with Flight Tracker for the latest information on flights in and out of McCarran International Airport or you can check with McCarran International Airport. Some flights are delayed.

Ian Gregor with the FAA says McCarran doesn't have any snow removal equipment, so planes couldn't leave safely.

While many chose to keep warm inside the hotels, there were a lot of people who took advantage of the rare Las Vegas snow fall -- taking pictures at the famous Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign.

"I wasn't expecting it. It's crazy. The Mirage is going to look crazy with all that snow," said tourist Colby Hutchinson.

An estimated five inches of snow fell on the Strip. Even though it was very cold out, one tourist decided to strip down to his bright red Hawaiian shirt and shorts.

People living in Boulder City also got a good dose of snow. Residents say its been a while since they've seen snow like this. It's been a good two years since people in the community say they have seen this much snow actually stick.

Many families spent the day outside making snow angels and snowmen. But when the snow turned into slush, many of the roads became icy.

"We just drove in from Flagstaff where there was 14 inches of snow and we just don't have that kind of experience driving in the snow in Florida. We were white knuckling it -- a nervous wreck the whole time," said Ken Barker.

Boulder City got at least four to five inches of snow.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

This is a manifestation of weather fluctuations. I am not ready to blame it on wacky climate just yet although one of the central theories of artificial climate change deals with destabilized weather patterns over time as we can see over the last decade. Like I used to remind some in the past- you can't argue weather is climate due to the differences in time scale.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I was just there in Vegas last month and it was 75 degrees out! Amazing how much of a swing weather can take.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard
