I understand that once my I-94 runs out I cannot get a US driving licence until I have EA or my green card. Peple have been told they can still drive if they have a valid licence from another country. The trouble is, with the K1 visa, as soon as I change my surname my UK licence becomes invalid. Does this mean I will be unable to drive until i get EA or green card?

My wife drove on her UK licence for 6 months before she got her state licence, all she had to do was carry a copy of our marriage certificate along with her UK Licence.

You should check with your State as each one has there own rules about foreign licences.

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

Go to DMV.org, find your state and find the bit on non us citizens. That will list what you need to do.

In the case of Illinois

Non-Citizens

If you're just visiting and already have a valid out-of-country license, you may legally drive for up to one year in the state. Just be sure to have your license with you whenever you're driving.

While not required, it's a good idea to also have an International Driving Permit issued from your home country. The permit basically translates your license to make it understandable to U.S. officials.

How to Apply as a Non-Citizen

If you're temporarily residing in the state, and are legally allowed to be in the country, you may be able to apply for a Temporary Visitor Driver's License (TVDL).

To obtain the TVDL, you'll need to:

Provide acceptable documentation.

Pass the vision, written, and driving tests.

Pay the appropriate fee.

In most cases, the license is valid for three years or until your visa expires, whichever period is shortest. For more information, visit the SOS's page on applying for a TVDL.

NOTE: Non-citizens who wish to obtain a Social Security number can submit an application to the Social Security Administration along with documents to provide age, identity, immigration status, and work eligibility. For more information, call (800) 772-1213.

State in Colorado. I think as a previous poster says I can drive using my UK licence as long as I carry my marriage certificate. Once I have resided 90 days I HAVE to get a CO licence so I actually might have a month's gap there because you need employment authorisation or SS or whatever before you can get their licence.

(I have read DMV pages but they are not taking into consideration an immigrant coming and getting married and changing name!!)
