I think General Wesley Clark might have been an interesting consideration. I am sure he was considered. Perhaps Gates has his usefulness in the Iraq withdrawal before his days become numbered. It may end up coming down to his performance during that time.

I was thinking Chuck, Sylvester Stallone, Steven Seagal, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason Statham and Arnie, but that might be overkill.

Jean Claude can roundhouse his way from fight to fight. Seagal can break people's arms during interrogations while Jet does the fancy footwork in capturing insurgents alive. Arnold can of course... annoy them with a loudspeaker with his accent.

Can't fit Statham into that lot though.
