I was just wondering how you guys fly to Morocco. I've flown there twice and each time I used a different carrier...and it took two days each way. I am trying to get a ticket to go back in April for my birthday and I was wondering what your suggestions were. The first time I flew United to Chicago and then Iberia from Chicago to Tangier. The second time I flew Continental to Madrid and Royal Air Maroc to Fes. How do you fly??? :D

I've flown pretty much every airline and private planes to get there. I prefer the cheapest and shortest route. I've taken United to Dulles, then Iberia to Casa. I've also taken Delta to NY, then RAM to Casa. Also, Air France, Lufthansa, and British Airways. Whatever works best!

I book my flights through American Airlines. They don't fly there but their partners, Iberia and British Airways do. I fly out of Chicago and connect in London or Madrid. I also flew Royal Air Maroc once and while it was nice not having to overnight in Europe going back, going out there sucked, since the flight was delayed 12 hours causing me to miss my connecting flight in Casablanca to Marrakech. Also finding overnight lodging in NYC is not much cheaper than Europe  And with Iberia or BA, at least I can fly direct into Marrakech from Madrid or London. By far, my bookings through American Airlines have been the cheapest fare (ranging from $640-$850 rt).

I have had three trips to Morocco and have been very creative each time. My last trip was a killer because even though it was the cheapest, it took three days. I flew with as many carriers as you could think of Delta, British Airways, Air France, Iberia (hate because you have to pay for the food and it didn't have air conditioning), royal air maroc, and the one for the netherlands. I would highly suggest a direct flight if possible from JFK using royal air maroc. Usually I fly into Casa and we drive to Larache. Its cheaper to fly to Casa instead of Tangier. Orbitz and Cheapoair are both really good in terms of helping you find great prices. In the end, it all depends on what works best for you and which carriers you like. I am looking to book a flight in Feb or March also, so this time it will be interesting because I have taken so many.

I have been there 4 times and one thing I have learned is that time is money. The first time I went I flew to NYC then direct to Casa on RAM, then a 10hr train ride to his town on the east side of the country. The second time I flew from Seattle to Amsterdam on NWA (my favorite) and then direct to his city. Cost about $200 more but saved us 20 hours of train time. Def worth the extra money. I would take the most direct route if you can afford it. Gives you more time with your SO.

I prefer the Amsterdam airport so I look for the connections there and fly in typically on RAM.... I usually am looking for the best prices too but care more about where my layovers are. Good luck

Ive taken Air France DFW/CDG/Rabat and Iberia DFW/Barcelona/Casa with RAM taking over on the last leg of both trips. Iberia is cheaper and I like the Spanish (easier to navigate, nicer employees) airports better than the French. But Air France's planes were a tad nicer with more entertainment. Time-wise it was slightly shorter going through Spain to Casa, but we had a couple of hours on the train to Rabat (most of which was standing room only in the coupler)

In either event I had long layovers on the way home and holed up in a Holiday Inn on the airport both times. An expensive, but nice treat when you're run to death from traveling.

Iberia seems lately to have the cheapest flights into Morocco. I think it depends some on where you're from and where you're going. Smaller cities are more difficult obviously. However it's never taken me two whole days to get there. I've flown JFK - RAM direct flight to Casa and then to Marrakech. I've done British Air, Dulles - Heathrow- Marrakech and Dulles - Gatwick- Marrakech and Minneapolis - Gatwick - Marrakech. I've also done Minneapolis - Paris de gaulle - Marrakech AAAND Dulles - Rome - Marrakech. I've used Air France, United, and Northwest. I've also heard of people getting decent prices on Air Italia and awhile ago on one of the ME carriers (Air Emirates maybe?) I prefer British Air over all of them because of the convenience, price, and their willingness to work with you when things go wrong (which has happened tooooo many times).

I have gone into Casa the first few times but now flights to Marrakech are cheaper than flights to Casa so it makes more sense that way plus eliminates a taxi or train ride. What Maggie said about time is definetely true. Plus if they lose your luggage (which happens too often) they will deliver it to the last destination, if that was a 10 hr trip away you have to go get it....

As for layovers, I try to avoid them if at all possible. The last trip we had an overnight, then were not going home but on to visit my parents so we got a hotel in London. This was expensive! If we were in another city I probably would do it again but I don't know about London just the cab ride to the hotel (like 2 miles away) was like $40. I live in DC and that's pricy for me! If you do end up with an overnight the hotel is much better than sleeping in the airport. If I know I'm goign to end up with a layover, I make it longer (i.e. instead of 8 hrs I go for 12-15 hrs) this way I know I'll get a good nights rest (and our kids too). And not be running out of the airport, putting my head down, and racing back. I can shower, sleep, get a good meal or two in me and keep going.

We usually use the cheapest US airline to get to JFK (WPB-JFK or FLL-JFK) and then fly direct from JFK to Casa on RAM. My husband is from a small city that is the switching center for trains in between Casa and Meknes/Fez, so Casa makes the most sense. He likes flying direct from the US to Morocco to avoid anything in a foreign country. We live in South Florida and I am trying to convince him for our next trip to take Iberia from Miami to Spain and then to either fly or take the ferry to Tangier.

That would be fun - only problem is he'll need a visa for Spain if you go before his citizenship... we had thought about doing something similar last year.

Yup...he would need a visa. There is a Spanish Consulate in Miami and we have checked their requirements. It is not too bad.
