The one thing I don't like about Custom House is they ask for a ton of personal information. They want two forms of ID. I'm not going to surrender that! They're not a bank or any entity that I trust. Maybe that sounds somewhat paranoid, but all I have to go on is a website that says stuff -- there are no physical locations.

Yes there is a physical location in Victoria BC! I personally have walked by it numerous times when I lived there! No it isn't a bank, its a brokerage company, and they require the information to ensure everything is on the up and up. I have used it since 2005 and NEVER had any problems! The customer service is top notch! They will walk ya step by step doing trades, they are very customer orientated! When I'm transferring money, I want to ensure they are a legit company! My biggest transaction was over $25000 (when closed out 1 RRSP acct) and it went very smoohtly

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I know what you mean, when I was living in Dartmouth, drinking tap water was a GIANT no-no. Simply because, although we had the Atlantic Ocean, anything that went down the drain ended up in the harbor...and we didn't really have any major water treatment plant..so it was just a NO. DON'T DO IT.

Houston water is pretty good. I drink it from the tap all the time.

I'm sure Texas is fine, but Dartmouth is in Nova Scotia, Eastern Canada. The water down there is gross. >_> Kind of like when some friends and I spotted tourists swimming around in it. We all predicted that within the next couple of months that they would grow extra limbs.

It makes sense though they need alot of personal info, to avoid money laundering and such. It seems to be a pretty reputable company, I've had no problems and don't know how I would have transferred my $$ otherwise!!

Hey guys, I'm signing up for the Custom House foreign exchange service everyone recommended. But it doesn't state fees anywhere on the site. How much do they charge to transfer funds to Canada?

Thanks!

It's FREE!!

Free?? WOW. How do they make money then?

I wonder that myself, but I'm not complaining

I found this..

The spread between our “buy” rate and “sell” rate is our profit margin. Our spreads are tighter than banks so working with Custom House should result in significant savings.

So I am sitting in bed and I start complaining to my husband about my stomach and tell him I need eno. He looks at me all confused and says: "Brian Eno?" and I say: "No... enoooo"

And he starts laughing and says: "Emo"

At this point he thinks I am just joking around and just starts repeating me. He has no idea I am in pain.

And finally I realize what I am saying and I say: "ALKA SELTZER!"

Good Morning All.

It has been a busy time...too much stimulation.

Courses, visits/guests, uncluttering, donating, packing, car repairs, car shopping, kitty-sitting (just wrapped up...thankgawd as the l'il lovable rascal wailed late and early), planning the next few months of travel, boat show (plus seminars), and a possibility of an adventure of epic proportions.

Phew!

Heres a question you guys might now...You know under peoples names it says they are members, platinum members etc and has a bunch of blue boxes (which I assume is related to # of posts)...why do some have hearts and some not?

When you have hearts, it means you have no life. :P

Nothing to be paranoid of. They are a highly reputable institution.

I sold my US car to my parents in Canada. It's pretty simple, really. Here's a link to get you started: How to Import

Basically, you need a bill of sale, the ownership, and a recall letter from the manufacturer (which is super simple to get). On the Canadian side the car needs to be inspected prior to declaration and importation.

Tee-hee.

Good Morning every one. Happy crappy monday. My boss et on vacation for deux weeks. Wooo!

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Oops...I am not clear on one thing Krikit:

The recall letter:

Do I call/email Subaru and ask them for it?

The car is a 1996...

Thanks for your help.

Yes, at the bottom they list their physical locations in the world. They have several. And they tell you the reason they need that personal information is to comply with federal laws. They are trying to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing. Any institution that deals with money exchange will require this information.
