I thought this was kind of cool ...

Amazing Self-Stirring Coffee Mug

The self-stirring coffee mug really is awesome. All you do is pour in the coffee, add the cream and sugar, and press a button. Voila! Now need for a spoon or a stirring stick, the mug does the job for you, which also means less washing for you.

That's kind of what I was thinking too - drive over here and have a tour of our home some day, have a cup of coffee, and if you still have any questions we'd be happy to answer them! A barbeque is a good idea too.

Heck, just giving them driving directions to the house and having them arrive successfully would probably convince them that I do indeed live here!

When I moved to Vancouver from Montreal I got laughed at when I'd say, "Close the light!" or some equally franco/old-European way of speaking that I grown up with.

There were so many expressions that did not fly in B.C., and so many I heard there that I did not understand.

Some of my favourite Montrealisms is:

"Gimmee two secs" which sounds like sex...the expression meaning: give me a moment

and

"That's it that's all!" usually said emphatically at the end of a sentence to punctuate how serious and final you are.

and the Quebecois slang that I most love and always makes me laugh

"C'est le weekend!" heard ever Friday on those franco-pop radio stations.

I find all this dialect stuff fascinating.

:star:

I'm with you Spirit. Language fascinates me. I have to admit I have never heard "close the light". I never thought of Canada as being much different than the US language-wise (except the French of course) until I started dating my SO. It was hilarious between the two of us for the first few months. He even went so far as to buy me a book called How To Speak Canadian. Just a few of the things that he and I differed on -

Beaver tail - Elephant ear

Buck and doe - Bachelor/bachelorette party

Garburator - garbage disposal

Stanfield's - long underwear

tuque - stocking hat or sock hat

There were the typical things I'd never heard of - poutine, blue nose (he is one), butter tarts, Joe Louis cakes, LCBO, nanaimo bar, screech. However, some of the most interesting lingual issues we've had are with every day words. I'm going to call someone, he's going to phone someone. I'm taking money out of the ATM, he's using the ABM. I'm buying a case of beer, he's buying a two-four or a box of beer. I say butt, he says bum. I say mom, he says mum. I say a$$, he says #######. I have a zip code, he has a postal code. My milk has an expiration date, his has an expiry date. I stand in line, he stands on line. I'm eating macaroni and cheese, he's eating KD. I'm going to the bathroom, he's going to the washroom.

I found the differences so interesting that I started a spreadsheet of them about a year ago. We go back and read the spreadsheet now and laugh like crazy. As far as an accent is concerned, even though he lives in Ontario, his formative years were spent in Nova Scotia, so he sounds more east coast. I think he mumbles something fierce, but over time I've learned to understand him and don't notice an accent anymore. He says he doesn't notice my midwestern accent anymore, but that I still speak way too fast.

I'm right behind you, E. Stupid pain in the derriere.

Beaver tail - Elephant ear (In BC it's something else entirely. Can't recall what at the moment. Maybe a west-coaster can chime in here.)

Buck and doe - Bachelor/bachelorette party (Stag and Doe for me)

Garburator - garbage disposal

Stanfield's - long underwear (I've never heard of underwear being called Stanfield's. lol)

tuque - stocking hat or sock hat

There were the typical things I'd never heard of - poutine, blue nose (he is one), butter tarts, Joe Louis cakes, LCBO, nanaimo bar, screech. However, some of the most interesting lingual issues we've had are with every day words. I'm going to call someone, he's going to phone someone. (I call someone.) I'm taking money out of the ATM, he's using the ABM. (I use the ATM.) I'm buying a case of beer, he's buying a two-four or a box of beer. (I buy a two-four or a case.) I say butt, he says bum. And sometimes the men's room if there's a long line at the ladies room. lol)

I think I use the same words as you, mostly, SomberCat. (See red comments above.) I lived in Ontario and New Brunswick and spent major time in British Columbia. The words vary from coast to coast so you can pretty much tell where someone's from by the terms they use. (And their accents, of course.) Linguistics is definitely interesting. In fact, I was about to start a thread on it. LOL. Does anybody know what "A quarter of six" or "At ten of six" means with regard to telling time? Oh wait. Let me ask that in my new thread!
