I totally agree. That fire that little people have is perfect for successful adulthood. I hate that they want to douse it. :(

Its true.

I think that these days the world is more vast and children are able to become more of their own person. With all of the access they have with the internet, television, magazines, they are just able to find what they like at a much younger age. I think this causes a lot of kids to become individuals, and you no longer have the cookie cutter kids you once did. You're trying to teach kids the same way you taught them in the 1950's... but we're in a much different world now where things are quick, easy and accessible.

However, there has to be some way for kids and teachers to meet in the middle, I am not excusing the fact that my son likes to make "fart" noises with his hands sometimes during quiet time, or doesn't feel like doing homework. I take away privileges. But I am not going to send him to school on meds just because the teacher doesn't know how to deal with the quirks.

You look in my MIL's cupboard and you have different anti-depressants, mood stabilizers, etc. I have to wonder whether or not I am talking to her or a pill.

You know that trucker thread they had in OT - that was kind of interesting.

I have been thinking that a similar kind of question and answer thread with a hair dresser (yoooo hoooo missstacey) would be really interesting!

That trucker thread was good. But I only read it for a little bit. Did it go on for a while?

She gets her doctor to prescribe them to her. She is agrees with the use of medications, she had both her kids on ritalin, her youngest son is now on antidepressants but drinks and smokes pot too (so his pills aren't doing anything for him).

I don't think any of these drugs are doing any good though because she seems miserable most of the time, and is still really moody. :P

When I was a kid, my mother and a couple of my teachers nicknamed me Robespierre. I didn't really get it until I was in junior high, but the name was quite indicative of my behavior in primary school. That was years ago in the 80's, before ADD was even on the radar. I can only imagine what school administrators would try to do if I were growing up nowadays.

Well I just got back from the pediatricians office. She has told me what the doctor in Canada told me and what everyone else has told me. That even if he has "ADD" it is just above the line of normal behavior and she doesn't recommend further testing. She said if I wanted it, I could get it, but she suggested making the school pay for it if they want it that badly. She said that he is very well spoken, can name his favourite authors and is just your typical class clown. She also doesn't agree with medicating children unless they truly need it and she doesn't think my son is in need of medication.

I am relieved but at the same time, the schools are on their own little mission and it just means another hurdle because regardless of who I see and what I say, they won't stop until they've heard what they want to hear.

A.D.D. and others supposed diseases like S.A.D, etc. are marketing ploys by pharmaceutical companies to sell drugs.

Think about it...look at how many "disorders" were on the official psychology list in the 60s and look now.

It is mind-boggling.

True...but that is like my mom saying there weren't as many "gays" as there were back in the 60s... My answer? "Mum, yeah there were..it just wasn't acceptable for them to come out at the time...it was secret.."

Medicine is always advancing..Psych is always advancing..we know a lot more now then we did 50 years ago...and while we shouldn't be prescribing things left and right, there are disorders that need medical attention.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Also the population has pretty much doubled since then. I am not denying the disorders, I have worked in daycares and I have seen ADHD in its true form and its UGLY!

One of my cousins is severely ADHD, he had to be removed from the home at 12 and live in a group home for the rest of his teen years. And even when he would come home every second weekend his mom would have to send him back the same day he arrived because he would disrupt his brothers and the household so much.

This is the cousin who is also homeless and who also loves to bark at my husband about how much he hates Americans. He is just out of control. Its never fun being around him.

Yea I don't know he applies himself where he is interested.

I guess the schools don't think thats normal, but I think its normal, if something doesn't interest me I get really bored too.

Its just last year my son went to the doctors and they told him "no" and today she didn't recommend further testing, and I don't know how much more my son can mentally and emotionally take too you know? Its gotta be taking a toll on him as well. When the doctor asked him about what he thought he just sighed and you could just tell he is tired of talking about it. I felt really bad. :(

Anyways big child study team meeting in two weeks, I have the papers from this doctor and the papers from last years doctor. They really need to just lay off. Give him the help he needs and move on.

Sister treble is wise  . I find it upsetting when amateurs diagnose or un-diagnose mental illness. I mean, it really pisssssses me off. It is not something to be taken lightly at all.

That said, off I go to take my meds.
