I thought god loved everyone? Even the people that didn't fill out their petitions properly or faked a relationship and got caught in the interview...?

I think people say "passed" because they can't think of a better word for it. Maybe "visa approved at interview?" or "interview successful?"

Ugh. Don't remind me. I've been trying to get out of the house for the past hour but I keep getting dragged into the fray. I'm leaving in a few minutes, though, so they're going to have to be left unsupervised until someone else comes on duty. icon2.gif

Very intriguing. I've only been familiar with one sanctuary case, and it was a murder case. The suspect had killed someone and took sanctuary. The priest was working with the police to talk the man into giving himself up and was succesful eventually. The police would not comment about hypothetical scenarios after the fact. I always wondered what they would do if the church refused to help and the man held his ground.

I think this case is quite clear cut. The man is a former spy.

He very well could be.. it is interesting that the rest of his family apparently has legal status in Canada though.. kinda not consistent if you ask me.. something smells foul... and that could be the reason why the church got involved.

Good morning! It's raining here today. Hope it clears up for the baseball game tonight! We're heading out to supper before the game as well.

Yes trailmix, the room was lovely. The only problem was all the antique's in the room...all of those little "touches" that made it impossible to move around too much and disperse our stuff without knocking things over.

Your comment about santuary E, I'm thinking that it has and is being used in the US a lot. Maybe not so much now? There was a case, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, where a lady was to be deported, and she went to a church, in Chicago maybe? Anyway, I think she lived there a year. There was then a huge demonstration about illegal residents in California, and she was going to speak there, and was arrested and deported after leaving the church. Don't know that she ever made it to California. It was my understanding at that time, that this is or was a common occurrance here in the US, however just wasn't reported much anymore as it was so common.

Everyone have a wonderful day!

What bothers me about the whole thing though, as E said, is the inconsistency. Why are you deporting him based upon his former KGB status? That is secondary, in my eyes. First and foremost he overstayed a student visa and should have left the country then. He then brought his family over and somehow, they all got legal status?

How did this happen? Why are people doing in the right way when so many do it the wrong way?

He's not a refugee in the eyes of the law, either! So how did he qualify?

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

morning all! I think in principal having places of sanctuary are a good idea for certain circumstances.. as for them being in churches, I think it could be the result of churches historical significance in communities as being one of the largest /only meeting buildings in many communities (up until the recent past), so someone who is in trouble would run to the center of the community for help? I dunno.. that'd be my guess anyway. I don't think taking sanctuary should mean sheltering or harboring (as in sanctuary cities) but should be used only as another avenue or system to help people who are without social or legal recourse to buy a small period of time to make one last ditch effort for their case.

Living in a single building (such as a church) certainly doesn't sound like a picnic.. to be basically on house arrest (although many would say that is soft punishment) is still incarceration and a major limitation of one's freedom.

Understandable and I think they should be sanctuaries for people who underwent a legal path to immigration OR any citizen, pr, etc. of Canada for any needs.

It's harboring a criminal, actually, which the last time I checked was yet again, against the law. I know none of these things are black and white, but it's not fair that some rules apply to some people and yet not others.

I don't believe this guy is awaiting legal counsel. It appears he is staying there as long as he can until the Canadian authorities give up and leave him alone.
