I was thinking that.

I just read the mt. laurel fire department website and it says we're not allowed to cook under an open flame on a balcony.

Whoops. But I see so many other people do it. And yes for the record, if it everyone else jumped off a bridge, I would too... :P

They have that same rule in Ontario - although maybe it was municipal - in Kitchener - you can't BBQ on an apartment balcony, against Fire regulations

I always thought it was odd we were allowed any type of BBQ in my old apartment in Oakville - coal, propane, etc. I didn't have one, but often saw others BBQing and it was definitely allowed. The fire dept didn't recommend it, but it wasn't a rule.

Well I went to take my dog out and she was outside and she just had to walk up to me to let me know that a piece of coal fell through our balcony and on to her rug downstairs... first off why do you have a rug outside? EW!! Anyways she went on and on about this piece of coal.

Seriously?? So I just smiled and said: "Okay well, I'll keep that in mind the next time I see your son outside smoking pot with the neighbors"

She could have just mentioned it and I could have just said sorry but she followed me around while I walked my effing dog talking about this piece of freaking coal! She really didn't say anything to me after I said that, she just stopped and stood there.

Wow. Everyone's getting ready to travel to such exotic locales! Me too. We're going to NC on Thursday. icon2.gif

Good morning everyone! I'm a lobster today! We went to the game yesterday and I'll NEVER get 3rd base line tickets for an afternoon game again! My chest, arms, neck and face are so burned! I didn't sleep much last night. The Cardinals lost as well. :( I'll have to see if I'm too sore to participate in pilates as well today. I'm away tomorrow and Wednesday at a State conference for my volunteer work, so I'll be MIA for a couple of days. Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Oooooh, ouch, Carla. :( That sux. Have fun at your conference!

Well, talk about going with the flow and getting good luck!

We have talked for for 2 years now about extending the concrete patio out back to the edge of the house. Right now it is only big enough to take the patio table, chairs and umbrellas - no room for a barbeque or anything else. Our neighbour on the hill behind us has been doing some work on her house. I found out today that she was finishing off her basement and laying a patio out back. I heard the cement truck and thought I would ask the crew to give us a quote on doing ours. Well, timing was right - they were just finishing the cement work and the cement truck was getting ready to leave when I asked for the quote. The guy came down the hill to our place, looked at what we wanted (about 9' x 17') and said he probably had enough concrete in the truck right now and if we wanted it done today he could give us a really good price as he had all of his workers and stuff already here for the other job. I asked how good a price and he said $600 for everything. We had one quote already that was $3000 for the same area, so I called Joe and he said, 'Go ahead!'. So, his crew came down, dug out the grass, leveled it off, put in the wood frame and ferried wheelbarrows full of concrete to the cleared out area. When you have 6 guys working on it the job goes fast, and right now the new concrete patio is being laid and smoothed. When they are finished it should be really nice - and two days from now when it is dry we'll be able to barbeque out back as well! Who knew when I work up this morning we would have our new patio this afternoon!

We had a similar thing happen last year with this same neighbour - we had some land at the top of the hill left in deep ruts by construction workers and had wanted to get it leveled. We had already built the retaining wall on the lower side when our neighbour brought an earth mover in to do something similar work on her side of the property. We made a deal with him and got our side leveled out too.

I think I'm going to keep an eye on what she is doing - she seems really able to find good, competent workers for reasonable rates.

Hehehehe, well we don't interact a great deal as it is our backyards that connect and there is a huge hill and a run-off creek between us, but they have always seemed very nice when we do see each other. It is a woman and her teenage son originally from the Caribbean. She works at the library so I suspect that is where she picks up all of these interesting contacts. The neighbours next door to her are also nice even though we don't share backyards - we are sort of 'waving' neighbours.

Yeah, I figure the biggest cost saving is the original quoters were just 2 men working together rather than a team of 6 so would take a lot longer so more hours involved. They were also going to put chicken wire underneath the concrete (these guys didn't) but we had debated if that was going to be necessary anyway, plus the guys who did do the work had the concrete already and would have had to pay for what they didn't use, so this way they got to use it all. So, yeah, we can definitely pleased about the money we saved!

I trust you are ensuring all these workers are "legally" able to work in the USA? lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
