I'm on both sides with this one. I can understand having it for long trips, but I've seen a 2 year old who screams and points at the stupid thing any time they get in the car, even if its just a 5 minute drive! That drives me insane! Since when are parents so afraid to say no to their toddlers???

See, that's the sick thing in my opinion. The pointing and the " I need this mommy" act. I hope when I have children I can stick to my guns and say no. I know I do this with my dogs at the moment

(although there is really no comparison there haha)

I hope so too... my parents told me I was a hellion on wheels as a child. Seriously, I threw the worst tantrums (maybe it's because I'm a redhead LOL). One time in the grocery store checkout I demanded a chocolate bar. My Mom calmly told me no, it's too close to suppertime. I pitched myself on the floor and started convlusing in hysterics, all the other patrons were GLARING at my Mom. I played limp and she couldn't pick me up, she said it was the most horrible thing ever. I feel so bad, I hope I don't get repaid by having hellions myself!

I did that once..... then my mom spanked me in the store. So embarassing. I didn't do that again

The laws being what they are now, you can hardly do anything as far as discipline to your kids without fear of DCFS showing up at your door and threatening to take your kids away.

I only ever remember one time where I was embarrassed and it was at a Walmart in Barrie. Ethan had this thing for running into the clothes racks and hiding, and one day I thought I lost him. I just stood there trying to call him and he wouldn't listen, they did a code Adam in the store, which means they lock down the store until the child is found. My mother finally found him and as his grandma laughed it off, I wasn't laughing. I picked him up and just wanted to go home. He started freaking out and screaming and I literally had him under my arm walking out of the store. I got up to the check out area and he wiggled out of my arms and I had to just let him carry out his tantrum on the floor. I just stood there while he kicked and screamed. Everyone was staring at me, and they weren't staring with empathy, they were staring in disgust. So I crossed my arms and yelled out... "OH YA I BET ALL YOUR KIDS ARE JUST LITTLE ANGELS HUH!? I BET NONE OF YOU HAVE EVER BEEN THROUGH SOMETHING LIKE THIS RIGHT!?"

Nutty mom in aisle 5... I repeat nutty mom in aisle 5.

My mother came over, picked up Ethan and then grabbed me by the arm to lead me out of the store.

That was the only time I ever remember being super humiliated. Yea I lost my child and now he's freaking out, so I'm not 'mother of the year' Go back to your business and stop staring at me! :P

OMG!! That would be embarassing!! These are funny stories to tell your children when they are all grown up :D

The spanking thing... my parents put me over their knee and spanked me when I was bad, no harm done... I don't think a slap on the ####### is child abuse by any means.

I don't think its spanking. I was never spanked but I knew not to piss off my mom as a child. I knew when she was mad and when she was stern.

Parents these days just don't have in them to say no because they don't want to spend time disciplining their children. Discipline takes time, but parents are so busy with their own lives and stresses that they just give their kids whatever they want in order to avoid confrontation with their children.

I think its perfectly acceptable to spank your child (within reason). There is a very distinct line between giving your child a "whoopin" and a beating. My mom had this supermom power. When I would act up, or was about to do something really bad. When I was 9 or 10, my mom wouldn't buy me some super sugary cereal. So I said (very loudly so everyone within 30 feet could hear) "Mommy, I don't want to eat cat food for breakfast anymore". I thought she would just get the cereal to get me to shut up. No, my mom grabbed me by my ear, and twisted it, and drug me out of the store by my ear. Lesson learned

I can't personally bring myself to spank. But I don't think its wrong that other parents choose that route. Discipline isn't always universal and there's many methods to it.

I blame it all on not being able to spank your kids in public now :P

Nothing motivates a kid more than the threat of being embarassed in public or even worse, in front of their friends.

I used to get hold of my son's arm and squeeze it to get his attention, and then lean down to speak quietly in his ear "If you don't stop that right now I am going to hurt you/kill you/break your little fingers." (whichever statement fit the occasion) The whispering made him be quiet enough to listen so he could hear what I had to say. The tight grip and the menace in my voice assured him that I meant business.

And, Rob..... eating catfood for breakfast. I think your Mom and I went to the same school.

It's funny how much you don't care what anyone thinks when you're a parent. The other day Ethan kept asking me for something at Wegmans and I kept saying no, and then he asked me one more time and I turned around and yelled: "NO!" he stopped asking. Everyone else in the section just kind of stopped and stared. I didn't care.

The other week I took his PSP away and he got mad and told me he was going to move to a foster family, so I called his bluff and pretended to call a foster family and told him to pack his bags... he got sooo scared. I even started packing a bag for him!

He was sitting there crying: "NO MOM! I WAS JUST JOKING! PLEASE! DON'T DO IT! PLEASE MOM!"

So after I felt satisfied that he had probably learned a lesson, I said: "Fine I'll call them back and tell them to nevermind, but next time you should think about what you say before you say it"

He got it. :P

The good for sure outweighs the bad.

I love being a parent and I can't imagine any job that is more important than being a mother, its a beautiful thing to be. It's like anything else in life... it has it's ups and downs, but I am constantly learning and it's just awesome. It is a lot of work, but I wouldn't change it for the world.

You rock :) Call their bluff every single time....wish I'd done it more.

Yes - I have 'in the store' stories as well. At age 3 - my daughter took off running from the stroller and made it half way through the mall from the foodcourt (think Fairview Treble). She was laughing as she ran and I was fuming....I must have looked so mad when I caught up to her.

Then there was the tim when she was about 6-7 - she needed to be led out of the mall due to bad attitude towards mummy in the mall (cursed mall) so there was, marching her grim faced out of the place...my hand clenched around her beefy bicep so she couldn't get away...all the while she's crying and yelling, 'You're hurting my arm, oww...mummy.. I just looked at and said IT COULD BE A LOT worse....boy was I mad that day, but I remained calm believe it or not.

I hate the people who stare and shake their heads at the poor parent...if you can't be helpful shut-up and leave yourself. Don and I always make sure we tell the parent that we've been there and not to worry.

Our realtor emailed us a listing today - so I emailed her back and said sure, we can go see that today or tomorrow at 5:30 (this was just after 1 today)

So I just checked my email (i've been checking it like every 1/2 hour all afternoon), it says she emailed me 50 minutes ago, saying - call me if you can't make it, otherwise I will see you there at 5:45 - well I only just received that email!!

So I called her at 5:30 and got voice mail - I hope she isn't headed there now!!
