In the U.S. people spend billions to keep themselves entertained. :bonk:

I wonder how much of that will drop being most have had to tighten their spending habits.

My mind keeps me entertained, plenty.

:star:

I don't know. I imagine a lot of people are using credit cards now just to get by - so that will be the next U.S. financial disaster.

It's really too bad.

Yup.

When my honey wanted to surprise me and take me "into nature", well, there was line-up, pay to get in, park in a huge parking lot, and then go by tons of kiosks (food, etc.) to get to the nature part: an arboretum.

Sweet lord have people here never been in the wild?!

Would they die without food and drink for a few hours??? without direction? without loud music? without buying something????

sigh

No need to answer...and oops, please forgive my outburst; better placed in The Vent section.

I always wonder this. There is such a big to do about anything and everything these days. You see parents bring their kids to a zoo and they come out with ice cream and 10 toys.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Getting there!! May 4th is our Final exam!! the one has to write the NCLEX, so more studyign until that is completed, hopefully end of June, July timeframe

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

You know what else bugs me along these lines.... And I aplogize to anyone in advance if they do this but it bugs me.... when people have those TV/DVDs in their car to entertain their kids on road trips or whatever.... when I was a kid, we sang songs, played I spy, etc.... now they plop the kids in the car and turn on the telly. What about other forms of entertainment besides mindless TV/movies!!

I think some justify it saying they're watching Baby Einstein and its educational.

I'm not sure about howI feel about that one, Jill. I felt so sorry for my parents any time they had to bring all of us somewhere for long distances. We weren't bad kids but my little brother ALWAYS bothered me and it never ended.

Music really got me through long trips and I think kids are now more apt to watch TV/DVDs WITH music in them then just solely music. I want my kids to grow up listening to music as a form of entertainment that makes them think.

I guess I don't mind the whole dvd thing in cars. I do think parents probably use it to go from their house to the grocery store though. haha

I agree with this. I would never put the tv/dvd in my car. My son is amazing at road trips though luckily and loves looking out the window, its never been an issue for us. I guess I lucked out in that department.

About the toys... I am on of those parents who buys my son something at the end of the museum, aquarium or whatever. They make you exit through the gift shop usually. I will usually give him a limit and he'll choose one or two toys within that limit.

Its just a nice extra and usually the toys are educational. :)

When I was a kid, we used to drive up to my grandmothers house near Lake Tahoe from Los Angeles. It was about an 8 hour drive. We would play games and stuff for the first couple of hours. Then at about the 90 minute mark, the walkmen would come out. After about 2.5 hours, we would be fighting to the point where my dad would pull over and get out the duct tape to deliniate the physical border in the backseat. After fighting for another hour about who actually controlled the piece of the backseat that was covered by the tape, we would pull over again and my dad would make a new border, complete with a 8" buffer zone in between that he declared was his area and anyone that went on it would get spanked.

Point is..... a DVD player in the car would have saved me from getting smacked in the mouth by my dad several times over the years :P

I'm on both sides with this one. I can understand having it for long trips, but I've seen a 2 year old who screams and points at the stupid thing any time they get in the car, even if its just a 5 minute drive! That drives me insane! Since when are parents so afraid to say no to their toddlers???

See, that's the sick thing in my opinion. The pointing and the " I need this mommy" act. I hope when I have children I can stick to my guns and say no. I know I do this with my dogs at the moment

(although there is really no comparison there haha)

I blame it all on not being able to spank your kids in public now :P

Nothing motivates a kid more than the threat of being embarassed in public or even worse, in front of their friends.

I have a friend who when she got her SUV specifically requested a DVD player. She said it was for road trips. Well her son who got used to watching movies in the SUV, insists on watching it at all times now, including the 15 minute ride to play school. He has a stinking fit if you go anywhere and the DVD player isn't on.

I can understand the need for entertainment on road trips. We drove from the NWT to Gaspe, QC a few times. We had things to do, but a lot of the time it was taking in all the sights we were passing.
