And I'm not quite sure why Jimmy Carter, who was part of the UN-delegation in 2004, would claim that the referrendum in Venezuela went fine if it didn't.

Carter also rubberstamped the Ethiopian election last May while the EU observers attested that the election failed to meet international standards. Knowing directly from my wife's family that that was not an election but a staged confirmation of the guy in power, I wouldn't give much value to Carter's evaluation.

Fair enough! So, I'll take back the Carter as a reliable source.

I don't know about that, I used to think so.

I wanted to edit my last post, but too late. Anyway, the Organization of American States also said it was fair and square. (Source)

I'm willing to be convinced of the opposite; I'm just skeptical because of the contrasting reports I get from Venezuela.

OAS here OAU there - one dominated by the US the other dominated by tyrants that won't point fingers at one another. I don't know too much about this Chavez guy or Venezuela but some of the evaluating bodies out there are rather questionable.

I agree. But then there are some reports from Venezuela in European and American papers that claim that unlike other South American politicians, Chavez relies on democratic institutions; the discord with the US appears to be the result of close relations to Cuba (Link 1, Link 2, Sorry, the second article is in German). And while I view Castro as an autocrat even though he has raised the standard of living for most Cubans, I don't think the same of Chavez.

Ah. The anti-Christ of capitalism. This is starting to make some sense now. Thanks for the articles.

I am impressed at how easily media scam people. It’s true, Chavez has been working the media to make all the scam in Venezuela seem “legal”.

When you stand in line for 8 hours to vote against a president with at least 500 thousand people (in just one voting center), when you see the so-called “international observers” walk among these people who are chanting songs against Chavez, meanwhile the military is just delaying the voting process, when people appear and disappear from voting lists, in a country where the “dead” people are voting, or where the same citizen ID number votes in 10 different voting centers, when officials for the National Electoral Center are appointed by finger by the government, it is pretty darn sure that the elections can be considered clean, clear and fair… right??

On the other hand, don’t you have any information of the Venezuelan President giving protection to Guerrilla’s bosses, and to a Peruvian Convict? Information about the Venezuelan president prohibiting the manifestations of the Political Opposition?, of the President’s supporters running the American Embassador out of a Charity by throwing rocks at him and then chasing his car? And the president congratulating these hordes simply because it gives him great pleasure to humiliate the US? Chavez liasons not only with Cuba, but with every other country against the US?

The only reason Bush and Blair hate Chavez is because he has made sure that the oil profits benefit the population of Venezuela and not the oil companies. Oh, and because he started the political transformation of South America.

Oil profits benefiting the population in Venezuela?? Now, that’s a real joke. Chavez is using the money to create “Circulos Bolivarianos” which are basically civilians snitching on other civilians who supposedly conspire against the government (just like Castro did in Cuba), creating hate between his own people.

And btw,

And while I view Castro as an autocrat even though he has raised the standard of living for most Cubans, I don't think the same of Chavez

Castro raising the standard of living for most Cubans?? My friend… open your eyes, Cuba is one of the poorest countries, with the most oppressed people, and probably I am not the best person to talk about it, since I am definitely biased against Castro and Chavez… but these two are only seeking their own benefit and the only standard of living that has been raised and will keep on being raised is their own. They could care less about the “people”, it’s about power… never about the people.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

"Go right to hell, Mr. Blair," Chavez said, using local slang that is more vulgar.

Tell us what the actual local slang was.... :innocent:

Something like: "go to eat SH*T" and he says that in tv. I wonder what Tony Blair is going to say about this... he is such and English Gentleman

Tony B Liar is the most mendacious Prime Minister we have ever had... I read the headlines in the Guardian which said "It's ok to be a poodle Mr. Blair - but at least bark". That pretty much says it all!!!

Tony B. Liar is no gentleman... he is a politician... I for one have always believed that he had David Kelly killed. I do not believe he committed suicide. But I digress!!!

What I like about Hugo Chavez is that he has the balls to stand up for himself.

Paul and I met on the Bazaar on the 14th January (he joined my progressive rock forum that day)

July 3rd he flew to England to meet me

We fell in love while he drove all over the place coz I cannot read maps (we were supposed to go to Ingleton - but touched Darlington 4 times, Pierce Bridge 6 times, Scotch Corner twice and Bernard Castle twice and we never did make it to Ingleton)

It has been so long and so much has happened in between...

Arrived in Houston on October 29th 2006

Married 17th November 2006

Lost my father 8th January 2007 (all dates are a blur after this)

Conditional Green Card dated 24th October 2007

Oh God, I just don't know where to start..... Threads like this make me really angry and upset, because some people give their opinion without being well informed...

It is true that Chavez won fair and square in 1998 (or so we think), after having attempted against democracy.... In 1989 he lead a coup against Carlos A. Perez, who was president for the second time round... I remember waking up at 6am and watching a bunch of military officers on TV saying that X amounts of states had been taken by them, and that they were nearly done in Caracas and that they could say that the was a TOTAL SUCCESS.... Then, a couple of hours later, Chavez came on TV asking his fellows to give the power back to the governors of the state and hand themselves in, as he had failed (!!)...

He then went to jail for a few years, and was released Movementin 1996 when he started his own party (The Movement of the Fifth Republic) and started campaigning against the goverment (which by the way, released him!).... Anyway, we went to elections, and loads of people believed in him, and voted for him (I am proud to say that I was never one of them)....

After that, it all went pearshaped.... He changed the Constitution (and he continually does when it doesn't suit him), created a national assembly (which he controls) and created about 5 more ministries (after he said that he would actually merge some of them as it was a bit useless to have so many!)... Then he started giving oil at "preferential rates" to Cuba, and it was well recognised that he was supporting the Colombian Guerrillas (and this was one of the reasons for the two countries to fall out - big time!)...

Anyway, in 2001 he decided that he would name the people who would be in the Board of PDVSA (State owned oil company - one of the biggest in the world) without taking into account experience, time in the company, hierarchy or ANYTHING! And he started naming people from the Army that had never worked in the company before... what happened next? The people in the company got really upset and started demonstrating agains these policies - stating that the company had always based its promotion in "Meritocracy" which basically is earning promotions or salary raises by MERIT AND MERIT ONLY!

The Private sector together with the National Union and PDVSA decided that the country could not carry on like that, and asked by the people they went on strike in April... It started on the 10th... On April 11th a multitudinary march was convoked and around 2 million people marched against the government and its policies... Chavez always said that if we were unhappy with anything, we could go to the Government Palace and protest aganst the government... So the people started marching to the Palace to show him that they didn;t agree with the things that were happening... What happened next, is probably one of the worse things that have happened in Venezuela in the last 15 years... 19 people were shot dead by people Civil Servants, and other government supporters... A TV reporter could film everything happening, and the whole country saw how innocent people were being shot for showing their disagreement!

After that, it is all pretty much the same old story... Any election we go to, we get cheated on... They are all rigged by the government... And what is worse... If you signed the petition to go to the referendum in 2004 you are basically banned of getting National ID's, Passports or any other service that depends on the Government...

now you come and tell me that he is a guy that is "pretty much" democratic, when all the powers in Venezuela are driven by people close to him.... Tell me that he is honest and good, when he speaks the way he does, that embarrasses me so much, as people might think that that is how venezuelans are.... Tell me that he has done good in the country, when people live on less than $.50 a day, have no clean water, no sanitation, no NOTHING....

For those of you who think that Chavez is all good and that he can do no wrong, I dar you to go to Venezuela and live there for a month, just like an average venezuelan and tell me you like it!

Ps. Oh, and btw... Cubans have a very very low standard of living... They need state checks to get stuff from the shops and they are only allowed a certain amount of food, clothes, etc a year... Do you call that good living? Please don't insult us!

Sorry I got carried away.... I just can't believe people some times!

balls? yeah right! He's got balls now 'cause he's got the power... the oil... and big communist nations to back him up should anything happen....

In 2002, when we had the socalled "coup" he actually resigned, one of the closest of his military friends came out on TV and said that "they asked asked for his resignation (given what had happened during the day - 19 people killed by his supporters and 200 injured) and he had accepted it"... Rumour has it, that he asked to be shipped out to Cuba together with his family... You call that balls?...

Do you also call balls the fact that when he lead the coup all his friends succeded in their tasks but him??? And then he came out on tv requesting them to surrender???.... Yeah ... balls.... right.... balls... what are balls again?
