Soz if this is a stupid question, but can anyone explain the sponsorship thing that I keep seeing mentioned?

Ive tried to find an explanation somewhere on the site but cant.

Do you have to be sponsored by someone to file for an AOS? Im a bit confused what it means

I am guessing you are talking about the affidavit.. the USC spouse is the sponsor of the beneficiary for the affidavit of support. If the USC spouse cannot sponsor the beneficiary alone (they dont meet the USCIS poverty guidelines) a co-sponsor will be needed.

So yes in a way you need to be sponsored for AOS, but only for the affidavit of support part. Everything else you fill out yourself.

lauraxmarie,

Yes, an intending immigrant requires a financial sponsor - someone who will assure that the immigrant will not become a burden on the US public. In the case of marriage-based immigration that sponsor must the the US citizen spouse of the intending immigrant.

You need to meet 125% of poverty level for the family size to sponsor - so if you/your spouse meets this then you are Ok - he/she can do the I864; if not then you will also need to line up a co-sponsor. Good Luck
