I don't get this whole "coke" thing is from the south. I live in NC and I've never just called soda, "coke". And tbh that's just stupid. If you want a Mtn Dew then ask for Mtn Dew. If you want Sprite then ask for Sprite. The "coke" thing doesn't happen around here in these parts of the south.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

I like the term soft drink...like the opposite of a hard drink.

But you do know what pop is, right?

I really just want to know if most people know what I'm asking for if I said, "What kind of pop do you have?"

Based on this very unscientific thread, it seems that most do!

If I were at a party at your house, and you asked me what I'd like to drink and I, in turn, ask you what kind of pop you have, would you know what I was referring to?

Yes, I would know what you mean a soda

It is very regional, but everyone should know the major ones like pop or coke. Now, if you asked for a fizzy, i'd have to guess a bit at that one.

You say soda, I say pop...let's call the whole thing off!

As long as you don't force me to use the term soda, we can be friends. :P

I know it is me who you are referring to when I disagreed with you. You, however, are asking a lot of people who have immigrated to the US if they know what pop means. They might have used the term pop in their home country.

I didn't really think it was this big of a deal but my opposition to you was that no one here in New Jersey has ever known what I meant when I said pop. It is regional and if you have lived in one place for most of your life, you might not know or be familiar with the term.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

It's not a really big deal, its just that I really think most USC do know what pop is and I wanted to see if I was way off base or not. I sincerely felt curious to know. I still think most (not all) will know what you mean when you say pop.

Based on my knowledge of the regulars here in OT, I'd say most who responded are actually the USCs in the international couple.

I did not read through the whole thread but when someone asks me that it takes me back to my childhood in Wales where 'pop' was any fizzy drink.

"The term "pop", once popular as a generic term for soft drinks is now mainly restricted to the north of England, and Wales."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soft_drink_naming_conventions

I had to check that I was remembering that right
