For the most part CR-1 tends to not get SSN automatically.

Visit local SSA office and order a card, present the passport with visa and I-551 stamp, and form SS-5

http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf

Green-card comes from USCIS, SSN card comes from SSA two different offices.

I ticked the box on the visa application form to have the SSN number issued automatically when I got here but it wasn't done. Had to go along to the SS office to request one, got it a week after that.

What to expect at the POE - WIKI entry

Go to your local SSA with your passport (and I-551 stamp inside). Ask them to look you up on their system to see if you have firstly made it into their system, and secondly if you have been assigned a number yet.

1. If you are in the system and have been assigned a number ask them to give you a print out of the number and confirm with them the mailing address the card will be sent to. It should usually arrive within a week

2. If you are in the system but haven't been assigned a number, fill in form SS-5 and turn it in on the spot

3. If you aren't in the system then POE/USCIS is simply being slow and you'll just have to wait a bit longer
