Mexican IS a language as American is a language.

Mexican is not Castillian (proper Spanish) and American is not (Public School)English.

I hope I taught you something today...

And you right now are writing is "Ignorancy", the language of ignorants. This become way more than the OP said at the beginning and there is not need to insult people from different countries. Shame on you.

Insulting people from different countries?

You did not get it, did you?!

A permanent resident voted in US elections. It is ILLEGAL. Anyone with a brain, anyone who understands English would know that permanent residents are NOT ALLOWED to vote. That simple. She voted and she wants to get away with it. If she can vote why can not other PR vote? Nobody can defend an illegality. Nobody should.

Nobody can say it is difficult to see the fact that PRs can not vote. If they do they flout the law of the land.

We all know that some Mexicans do resist learning English. They tend to see the US as a second Mexico. They use Mexican pesos in some US stores. They demand the US to be the second Mexico. No. Learn English and obey the laws. That simple.

Do not pretend you did not know the law. What you know the best is to be an illegal, to indulge in illegality.

No. You are going to be made to learn.

I am now a US citizen.

You can not rob banks, if you do rob a bank the court would formally ask if you robbed a bank. It is completely up to us to kno our rights and our obligations. Not knowing them does not save us from any repercusssions.

Yes, I totally agree we should all know our rights but at the removal of conditions phase the question simply won't come up. Let's not beat up on this fellow VJer who asked the question out of real concern and totally copped to the mistake. I'm pretty sure most of us have messed up on one little thing or another having to do with our individual immigration journeys. More likely, an administration error (or two or three or four) have been made by the USCIS in connection with our cases. I've had one that almost kept me from coming to the US at all, and since then, two more minor ones. They were mistakes I couldn't forsee, were out of my control, very frustrating, and cost me time and money to fix. Bottom line is people are not perfect and therefore make mistakes. I doubt the USCIS is so Draconian as to deny citizenship or start deportation proceedings if the mistake is explained in a forthright manner with any available documentation (like a copy of the voter registration card.)

I get it. You're using this issue as a jumping off point to air your concerns regarding undocumented immigrants from Mexico. Loud and clear. Now take it to off topic, as it's not relevant to this thread.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. As has been stated already, the OP really needs an immigration lawyer for this.

After going all over the net, it appears that just registering to vote is Bad, but they can look past it... but registering and voting is hard to ignore, and seems like a garauntee to get deported. This really sucks, but knowing it was an honest mistake is of some relief, and we could always just relocate to Mexico. Before that happens, we are going to talk to County elections people and ask for some documentation to back up our story. After that we will lawyer up and turn in our i751. The only pressing issue is whether my wife can leave the country (will she be detained at the border, Im sure a lawyer could tell us). And just to be clear, we dont blame anyone for this, in fact we dont even blame ourselves, it was an honest mistake and life goes on.

As for the "Mexican" language, there are dozens of native languages in Mexico being spoken (nuautl, triqui, etc etc). According to some people (or just one person) here, apparantly these people also speak "Mexican," too. Gotta love that logic.

Nobody knows she voted. I do not think it will be a problem at the border or anywhere else up till she applies for naturalization and she is interviewed and if asked the question...

Native languages are unfortunately not called Mexican or American. Only the invading colonial masters' languages are. Like Mexican (Spanish) or (American) English.

Internetfake, your point of view I disagree with, but I think you should be cautious calling the Spanish language (spoken by Mexicans) as Mexican. In this sensitive world, some people will construe this as ignorant, and maybe some will think you are bigoted. In most cases, you wont get the opportunity to explain your reasoning.

Happy holidays.

You must first learn before attempting to teach.

Thousands of miles away from Spain and it is still a dialect, eh?

Three German dialects are spoken in Bavaria. Bavaria is a tiny little place. You can call these dialects. Not Mexican, not American.

Your condescension is astounding.

I've been a language teacher for 10 years, of both English and Spanish, and I've taught EFL students as well. Mexican Spanish IS a dialect of Spanish. But, carry on if it makes you feel better about yourself. It appears your problem isn't with language, dialects, or education, but rather with Mexican immigrants.

To the OP I wish your wife luck.

Went to the elections dept and verified that she was registered for over a year. She voted in one election. The registration form showed that she marked that she wasnt a citizen, but she also signed her name on the form. The person there said that she should had never been registered, but mistakes do happen, especially with this past cycle with alot of new registrations. The search for a lawyer in the San Jose area has started.

edit: To avoid any misunderstanding, we dont blame the elections dept at all, it would have been nice if they tore up her registration form to save our @sses, but we had plenty of time to figure out the answers for ourselves. All I can do is hope it doesnt bite us in the @ss too bad.

Is Slovenian a Russian dialect? No, they both belong to Slavic group.

Is Romanian a Latin dialect? No, it belongs to Latin languages group.

To educate your stupidity

Slovenian is not a dialects of Russian the languages are from the same group which is called Slavic languages, the same goes for English and German which are in Germanic group. I recommend you read some book on languages so you will understand the diffrence. Argument about proximity is ignorant.

To the Slovenian: It is only a matter of time that defines if Slovenian is a language at all, but not a 'dialect' of Russian.

To the 'teacher' I have seen gazillions of ignorant brainless teachers. I guess people have to make ends meet...

I am now a US citizen.
