I asked my dog what he thought about all this "Iraqi reporter throws shoes at Bush, calls him dog", he said, that should be fun for Bush to go fetch, and calling him a dog was a supreme compliment, but an insult to real dogs.

I've kept my dog away from the TV, radio, and newspapers. If he hears that someone compared Bush to a dog, he's gonna be piiiiiisssssed.

And so I confess I did not read this thread, although I saw the video in discussion yesterday.

Was impressed with W's supreme ducking abilities.

I just really wanted to comment on your siggie Mox.

No offense meant to Olivia, but that part of the coverage made me laugh. Crazy orientalist media. Oooh, the mystical Arabs, where throwing shoes at people is an insult. Fortunately the media was there to explain this strange incident to Americans, who otherwise might have thought it was a sign of respect! :jest::rolleyes:

I consider it Iraq threw a shoe at America and I'm personally insulted. At least that would be the interpretation by an Arab who understands the insult from the culture.

So perhaps it will be the Iraqi people throwing roses at Obama after all. He is withdrawing the troops intelligently, or so we are told.

current tense used - right now obama isn't doing a dayum thing like that.

Well from what I've been reading it seems that this guy is a Baathist. Its a shame that he wasn't a regular Iraqi citizen. It would have had more significance if he were an Average Joe.

i'm not outraged by the shoes...

i'm more thinking: where the heck were the secret service guys? by the time the ss guy got on the stage, the journalist had reached down, not once, but twice, to remove his shoes and hurl them at Bush, with pretty good accuracy... that's crazy...

what if it had been something more dangerous like a cue ball, or a bow & arrow, or a poison dart or something ?

Is it Jan 20 already?

This is what Obama is doing until then.....

Actually your grammar was correct. It's perfectly acceptable to say "he is withdrawing..." when you are talking about a plan or a future event. As in "The US is holding elections..." or "She is getting her hair done." It was perhaps not the clearest usage, but there was nothing wrong with it and I think most people understood your meaning.

Of course. Its only a matter of people wanting to jump at anything to [somehow] show fault at something contrary to their line of reasoning, perhaps.
