Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone captured terrorist in Mumbai, has written a three-page letter to the Pakistani High Commission, stating that as a citizen he was entitled to seek legal help from his own country to fight his case in Indian courts.

The document not only finally settles the debate about the origins of Kasab and his fellow terrorists is a major embarrassment for Islamabad which has dithered about accepting that the Mumbai attack was launched from Pakistani soil.

Perhaps, what's worse for the detractors in Islamabad is a confession contained in the letter written in Urdu. "Mein sabse bara gunehgar hoon, kitne bekasoor logon ki jaan li hain, Khuda mujhe maaf karein (I am the biggest sinner, I have killed so many innocent people, may God forgive me),'' the terrorist wrote in a repentant tone.

"Sabse bara gunehgar to mein mere maa-baap ka hoon... unke dil ko thes pahunchaya hain (My biggest crime is against my parents... I have given them immense pain).''

Kasab has also requested the Pakistani high commission to at least bury Ismail Khan's body in Pakistan. It was Khan's last wish, the letter added. Khan was the terrorist who accompanied Kasab as they spread terror from CST to Girgaum Chowpatty."Uski aakhri khwaiash thi ke marne ke baad usko Pakistan mein dafnaya jaye (His last wish was that he be buried in Pakistan after his death),'' Kasab wrote.

"We have forwarded the letter to the Union home department which, in turn, will be sending it to the Pakistani high commission in New Delhi,'' joint commissioner of police (crime) Rakesh Maria said.

The letter contains details of his nine colleagues (and himself) Pakistan may now find difficult to ignore. Additional commissioner of police Deven Bharti said the letter had minute details of each of his nine colleagues killed on 26/11. It mentions not only their addresses but also names their handlers, including four important Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives: Hafeez Saeed, Zakir-ur-Rahman Lakhvi, Kahafa and Abu Hamza.

Kasab claims he had lost his head in the swirl of the jihad brainwashing by LeT and ISI operatives.

"Bahak gaya tha mein, Lashkar ke darindon ne mukhe phansa diya (I was misled, Lashkar's devils ensnared me),'' he said.

"Pure Pakistan ko badnaam kiya hai, Khuda mujhe maaf karein (I have tarnished Pakistan's image, may God forgive me).''

The letter also mentions that they were allowed a week's leave after they had completed their arms training some time in September. "They were told they could go anywhere they wanted to and Kasab, who left home two years before that, went to his village and met his old parents. He also took their blessings, saying he was going for jihad,'' Maria said.

The State Forensic Science Laboratory has sent a report of the two taxi blasts in Vile Parle and Wadi Bunder, confirming the use of RDX and petroleum oil in the two bombs. The composition of explosives was prima facie similar to those used in the 1993 serial blasts, Maria said.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

He's now a triple failure (failed to die-for-cause, failed to rack-up anywhere near targetted number of casualties, and now shows remorse) and has proven himself a chop by not remembering his country's history of refusing to aid its own caught goondas (it's refused admission since 1976 to biharis--many of whom had been involved in 1971 "Operation Searchlight"--from Bangladesh; not even under Musharraf, who is of Bihar-origin, did this "policy" change).

On Monday, fighter jets flew low near several of Pakistan's major cities in exercises that briefly delayed two Pakistan International Airlines flights, airline officials said.

Pakistan's air force declined to comment on the flights but issued a statement saying that "in view of the current environment, the Pakistan Air Force has enhanced its vigilance."

Now that it has Kasab's letter in hand, Pakistan faces pressure to answer to India's demands that it turn over wanted leaders of the Pakistan-based militant group, Lashkar-e-Taiba, accused of plotting the attacks.

Former PM of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, speaks.

"It has been said this individual named Ajmal Kasab hails from Faridkot village,” Sharif told Geo News in an interview. “I’ve seen and I personally got this checked. The village and its surrounding areas were cordoned off. His parents are not being allowed to meet anyone. What was the need to do this? If (Kasab) is not involved (in the Mumbai attacks), then he is not involved. People should be allowed to meet everyone in that area. All this points to the fact that we too need to set our house in order."

Sharif said if Kasab was "involved in any way, despite that his parents should be allowed to speak out and say the boy has been (away from home) for three or four months or one or two years and we’re also very worried about him".

He wanted to know why people and journalists were being barred from meeting Kasab’s parents and other residents of Faridkot.

Pakistani security agencies and officials in Faridkot have launched an apparent cover-up operation since India revealed that Kasab belonged to the village. His parents have reportedly been shifted from the village.

BTW, before Zardari ordered cordonin off of Faridkot village (so he could maintain his denial stance), a Dawn (last-i-checked, this was the paper owned by Jinnah, still HQ'd in Karachi) reporter already got Kasab's dad to "eat crow";

Even as India persists with its protests against Pakistan's refusal to take action against the perpetrators of 26/11, Islamabad's diversionary tactics have touched a new low.

On Thursday, Pakistan pulled another rabbit out of its hat. That the car bomb blast in Lahore on Wednesday, which left a woman dead and 3 others injured, was triggered by four Indians.

Pakistan media, quoting anonymous sources, identified one of the bombers as one Satish Anand Shukla, allegedly a resident of Kolkata.

The stunt, clearly fabricated to justify inaction against Lashkar leaders by drawing a parity between the jihadis who attacked Mumbai and fictional Indian agents, left Indian officials seething with anger.

Senior Indian officials were quick to rubbish the reports in Pakistan media, saying this had not been conveyed to any Indian agency by Islamabad. The Indian High Commission in Islamabad too denied having received any information from the Pakistanis.

"Nothing has been conveyed officially and we suspect this is yet another ploy to divert attention from the real issue, which is to bring the guilty in Mumbai attacks to justice. We don't believe these reports are true and if they are, we would like Pakistan to inform us officially,'' said a highly placed source, adding that it was mischievous on the part of Pakistan authorities not to have confirmed or denied it.

Aghast at the crude ploy, officials also said that India would not have chosen this moment to trigger off a blast in Pakistan, knowing that the bellicose neighbour would leap upon even a small excuse to justify its refusal to cooperate with the Mumbai probe.

The Lahore drama stripped the statement of Pakistan Prime Minister Yusaf Raza Gilani disclaiming hostile intent of any significance. "I assure you that we want excellent relations with India. We want to maintain good relations with India,'' said Gilani, adding that in his assessment there won't be any war".

The assurance would have meant little even in a normal situation, considering that it is neither Gilani nor his political patron Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan president, who call the shots in the country. But coming on a day when Pakistan's antics further vitiated the atmosphere and just a day after the political leadership had competed with the generals and Taliban to resort to vicious India-bashing, this appeared devoid of sincerity.

Even as he professed peaceful intent towards India, Gilani said that his government would not act till India provided evidence about the involvement of Pakistanis in the attacks.

With no Pakistani official willing to confirm or deny, the media there had a field day pointing fingers at India for fomenting trouble in their country in the light of the "arrest of the Indian terrorist". One report where a senior Pakistani police official expressed complete ignorance about the arrest of an Indian was withdrawn later.

Reports claiming that Shukla had been arrested not by the cops, but by intelligence agencies deepened the suspicions about the veracity of the "Indian hand' theory, as it is the local police who can arrest anyone.

Shukla was claimed to have been arrested barely hours after the blast. Three others were arrested later. A couple of pistols, cameras and maps were seized from Shukla and others. All 4 were described as Indian spies who wanted to carry out more attacks on Thursday at the behest of an Indian intelligence agency.

Pakistan in the past too has resorted to such moves to discredit India's demands. The source said that this was similar to Pakistan handing over its own list of fugitives to India after India asked Islamabad to hand over 40 men, including LeT founder Hafiz Saeed and JeM chief Masood Azhar.

According to the reports, Shukla had worked with the Indian High Commission in London for 3 years and had been living in Lahore with the assumed name of Munir Ahmed for the past 18 months. A fake identity card was also said to have been seized from him.

LAHORE, Dec 25: Law-enforcement agencies claimed on Thursday to have arrested three Indian nationals, two of them brothers, in the city on information provided by detained Indian spy Satish Anand Shukla, who was arrested from a place near the Bahawalpur House after a blast in the area on Wednesday.

Police sources told Dawn that three Indian nationals, identified as Ram Kumar, Ram Chandar and Prakash, had been arrested from the Shafeeqabad area early in the morning. Some arms, a camera and maps were found in their possession.

The sources said that Shukla and the other three Indians were involved in Wednesday’s bomb blast, adding that information received from them during interrogation might lead to more people and their connection with the neighbouring country.

The chain of Indian spies could be long and linked to local people, they said. A highly-placed source said that concentration of Hindus in the Walled City had come to light after a visit of Satish to Androon Lohari Gate.

Meanwhile, a police official told Dawn that a driver of the Punjab Fisheries Department, who had been questioned in connection with the Lahore bomb blast, was still in custody, but he had not provided any useful information.

He said police were now waiting for the outcome of interrogation of the detained Indians for information about the blast and their future subversion plans.

He said investigators had found a cell-phone at a place not far from the blast site. The phone which can be operated by remote control has been handed over to the Special Investigation Group (SIG) of the Federal Investigation Agency for forensic analysis.

“The presence of a remote-control cell-phone suggests that the people who had parked the explosives-laden vehicle had used the phone to detonate the explosives,” he said.

He said investigators had also found a used phone card in the wreckage of the vehicle which would be of help in tracing the network of saboteurs.
