Can you volunteer without EAD?

Matt would like to start looking for work, although our wedding is still two weeks away, so I am sure EAD is still a couple months away. There is job just a couple miles from my house that would be perfect, with my city council, and I think he was hoping to offer to volunteer in the position until he had permission to work. We aren't sure though if it's actually legal for him to even look for work until he gets EAD, let alone volunteer- does anyone know if he'd get in trouble for this?

:goofy: I'm sure someone will come up with a quote for you soon, but I "think" you cannot, but I definitely think that I read where you cannot volunteer at a company that is looking to hire you when you do get the EAD. Again, don't put any weight on my reply - wait for a more seasoned VJer to fill you in, but good luck. :goofy:

You can *look* all you want, its not illegal to *look*. You just can't work for pay unless you have a social security number and your EAD.

I know the rule has been posted before and darned if I saved it, but it is also stated you cannot volunteer for a position someone would be normally paid for, moreover one that you would be hired to do once you have your EAD.

I am sure someone can correct me if I am wrong!

Take a look at this :

https://s044a90.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/36f...b4?OpenDocument

I do not see anything there making it illegal for a K1 to work during the first three months, let alone to look for work.. But apparentely many VJers have a different interpretation of this, I am not sure why..
