This is what my pharmacy has on Vistaril...I hope it helps.
Vistaril, aka Hydroxyzine in generic form, Atarax (hydroxyzine hcl) reduces activity in the central nervous system much like some anti-depressants. It also acts as an antihistamine that reduces the natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing and runny nose, or hives on the skin. It is used to relieve the symptoms of common anxiety and tension and, in combination with other medications, to treat anxiety that results from physical illness

Hydroxyzine is used as a sedative to treat anxiety and tension. It is also used together with other medications given for anesthesia. Hydroxyzine may also be used to control nausea and vomiting.

Hydroxyzine is also used to treat allergic skin reactions such as hives or contact dermatitis.

Hydroxyzine may also be used for other purposes.

Hydroxyzine can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions which many typical anti-depressants don't do. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Stop using hydroxyzine and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as tremors, confusion, seizures, or restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck.

Hydroxyzine is not intended for long-term use (more than 4 months). Your doctor should re-evaluate the prescription periodically.

Side effects Drowsiness, the most common side effect of Hydroxyzine, is usually temporary and may disappear in a few days or when dosage is reduced. Other side effects include dry mouth, twitches, tremors, and convulsions. The last two usually occur with higher than recommended doses.
