Is there anybody here who has an idea about visitors (non-US Residents) driving in the US, particularly here in California? I have a valid driver's license (in the Philippines, non-professional) until August 2009 and I've read in the DMV site that as long as you have a valid license from your country, you can drive here in CA. I just arrived here in the US under a K3 Visa last November 22, 2008.

Can I drive here immediately without any trouble from the DMV rules here in CA (I'm planning though to enroll in a driving school here just to familiarize myself with the traffic rules and environment)? Need your help with this.

Thanks,

Patrick

The book says:

New Residents

When you make your home here or take a job and you want to drive in California, you must apply for a California driver license within 10 days.

Residency is established by: voting in California elections; paying resident tuition at a California college or university; filing for a home owner’s property tax exemption; obtaining a license; or receiving any other privilege or benefit not ordinarily extended to nonresidents.

http://' target="_blank">Adults Visiting California

Visitors over 18 years old with a valid driver license from their home state or country may drive in California without getting a driver license as long as their home state license remains valid.

I would assume that to mean once you become a legal permanent resident you would need to get a California driver's license.

you driver's license is valid with in 90days prior to your entry.....

i am same boat as you,

but i am from idaho, first i went to idaho transportation department

i presented my driver's license coming from philippines(non Pro) and since i am immigrant they allow me to use my driver's license 90days prior to my entry..

then i have my drivers manual here to read on before i can take my written exam....(you can ask from their office)

well my husband letting me drive here and let me familiarized traffic signs, rules and regulations.

and knowing that our driving in the philippines is much much different than here......

so if i were you u have to go to transportation department and ask what you gonna do just to be sure....

anyway they told me that if you know how to drive no worry about it just familiarized everything and you can take you written exam and the drive test exam, whatever it's called...

hope this information helps you...........
