Hi

How long does it take for K1 to get a Social Security number (assuming I am waiting for the two weeks to apply)?. I saw somewhere that the SSN office could notify a third party (i.e a potential employer) to save time ( I need the number to start working ) - How long would that take?

Thank you!

:goofy: My husband got his within 10 days. But my question to you is do you already have your EAD card? I guess you know you can't work without either that or your green card, and my husband's EAD took the ENTIRE 90 days to get. You don't have a visible timeline so I wasn't sure if you've already applied for EAD and got it or not. :goofy:

K1 PROCESS:

04/08/05 . . . . Sent I-129F to TSC

08/31/05 . . . . London Interview - APPROVED

AOS PROCESS:

10/06/05 . . . . Sent AOS/EAD/AP to Chicago Lockbox

05/16/06 . . . . APPROVED.

REMOVING CONDITIONS PROCESS:

03/03/08 . . . . Sent I-751 packet to TSC.

02/27/09 . . . . APPROVED.

CITIZENSHIP PROCESS:

05/21/12 . . . . Sent N-400 packet to Dallas lockbox

09/11/12 . . . . Interview in Atlanta. Oath ceremony same day. Keith is a U.S. Citizen!

I came through JFK and had my passport stamped with a work authorization. (temporary of course)

:goofy: Well that's good. I just didn't want you to get yourself in trouble if you didn't have an EAD and started working. We have to look out for each other. :goofy:

Thank you for your concern. :)

I went through JFK because I knew it was the only POE to deliver the work stamps, to be safe, but in any case, during my intervew abroad the Consular officer had told me that I was fully entitled to work with a K1 with or without the stamp until the the visa expired.

:goofy: You might want to check out this thread. There is talk of the "temporary EAD" you get through JFK and it might not be worth it accepting a job because your permanent EAD might not come before your temporary one runs out and the you could not legally work and would have to quit. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=16588 :goofy:

Thank you! I was worried it would be a matter of weeks or months like everything else

You can't really based what going to happen to you based on what happened to another person.

If you are lucky and the SSA office can verify your status through SAVE while you are there you should have your SSN card within a couple weeks and you can go back to the office the next day or two to get the number if you don't feel like waiting for the card.

If the office can't verify you through SAVE and sends a G-845 to verify your status you could be waiting weeks or maybe even months. It will be up to you to keep following up with the SSA office.

If the SSA office does send the G-845, suggest that you go back to the SSA office no more than once a week with your documents to (1) ask them to check SAVE again (2) ask if they sent a G-845 (3) if yes, did it come back (4) after 30 days ask if they have followed up on the G-845 by calling or sending another mark "second request."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After having waited at least 30 days and your local SSA office doesn't seem concerned about following up on the G-845 you can try contacting the SSA Regional Office (RO) responsible for your state:

http://www.ssa.gov/pressoffice/natlpocontacts.html

Refer them to this:

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203740

RM 00203.740 Requesting Additional (Manual) Verification By DHS

B. PROCEDURE – HOW TO REQUEST MANUAL VERIFICATION

STEP 6

DHS should respond to SSA within 15 federal work days after receiving the Form G-845. If DHS does not respond within 15 federal work days from the receipt of the G-845 from SSA, follow-up with the DHS, USCIS

Immigration Status office. (Allow 15 days plus five additional federal work days of mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from DHS.

Follow local practice to follow-up with DHS. Some SSA offices have an arrangement with the DHS, USCIS office to telephone for the follow-up contact; other SSA offices send a copy of the original G-845 annotated

“second request.”) If the DHS response is still not received within 15 federal work days after the follow-up contact (if the follow-up is by mail allow five additional federal work days of mail time for the G-845

to be received at and returned from DHS), make a second follow-up contact. If the DHS response is not received within 15 federal workdays (again, if the follow-up is by mail, allow five additional federal work

days of mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from DHS), after two follow-ups, contact the RO. Also report to the RO any trend that shows a serious deviation by DHS from the above time frames. The RO will consult with central office.

Oh I already read this, but in my point of view it's always preferable to work, even if it's temporary. You just have to be honest with the employer and tell him it might not last or just take a temporary job. I guess that's a matter of personal choice. ;)
