to the person who thinks i make $85k a year if u would like i can email u a copy of my pay stub and prove u wrong. then u can shut up and know the real truth.

the problem is...people want to say we make 75/hr adding everything including health care....bonuses (which there are none) etc. to the autoworker and then compare it to another manufacture and they only make $17/hr. the then dont add in the other things bringing them up to what we are suposidly making. they dont compare apples to apples.

The major critics of production line workers never had to work that hard or that fast, most were born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Not even time to wipe the sweat off your brow let along answering natures call to use the rest room. Try removing your glove compartment door the way you have to twist and bend over and just do it once, not a zillion times a day.

I chickened out myself, only could take it for three months, each day seemed like an eternity, that was the motivation I needed to study hard and go to college.

And it's not the hourly paycheck that counts, it's the piece work, if you are making 18 bucks an hour, but have to install 60 glove compartment doors in that period of time, each door only costs 30 cents to install. A dealer would charge about 75 bucks for that same job.

The number bantered about came from the manufacters themselves.......

Do auto workers really earn $73 an hour?

Posted Dec 11 2008, 06:56 AM by Kim Peterson Rating: Filed under: Ford, Honda, Toyota, GM, Kim Peterson

The New York Times debunks the claim that the Big Three auto workers earn $73 an hour. That number came from the car companies themselves during union negotiations, writes David Leonhardt.

But it isn't completely accurate. Yes, the companies do spend about $73 for every hour of unionized work, Leonhardt writes. Not all of that goes to the worker's pocket.

Here's how it breaks down:

Cash: All the basics -- wages, overtime and vacation pay -- add up to $40 an hour.

Extras: Health insurance and pension costs total about $15 an hour.

Retiree benefits: These are fixed costs, and the Big Three have a huge pool of retirees out there, Leonhardt writes. They add up to about $15 an hour.

So the true hourly salary for a union worker is about $55. That's about twice what the typical American worker makes. And it's about $10 more than what a nonunionized worker at Honda or Toyota makes, Leonhardt writes.

"There is good reason to keep GM and Chrysler from collapsing in 2009. (Ford is in slightly better shape.) The economy is in the worst recession in a generation. You can think of the Detroit bailout as a relatively cost-effective form of stimulus. It’s often cheaper to keep workers in their jobs than to create new jobs."

But, he adds, the Big Three will have to get smaller to survive.
