There are 80 faculty/staff members at my school and at least half are over 50...

Here here. I am the youngest in my Department. And I am not a spring chick.

Academia is the place where mummies tenured profs dwell for eternity....

Will America have an epidemic of professors who drop dead en masse in the classroom in another decade or two?

Actually, a high percentage of professorial faculty will retire in the next 10 years-- which will be a b1tch to cope with. A higher ed system run by noobs - cool!!!

Ten even five years ago was very normal for people to go job hopping here in Denver. If you heard of anyone being at their jobs for more than 2-3 years, it was pretty unusual. Now days, not so much and I'm not sure if it's because because I'm older but people I know are staying put, including yours truly. My perspective has changed and it's not really about going to the new hip company but more of which will be standing a few years from now, which one will give me the best benefits and which won't have massive lay offs.

What's interesting is that boomers where I work hold on tight to their little fiefdoms. When they do bring another staff member on to a position that might pose a challenge to their own, it's another boomer. So when these inbred bastids all retire, all that will be left is noobs.

If anyone has any more ideas on how to gently nudge boomers to their own very sunshine state condo, I'm all ears.

Can't help you there AJ. We've had such a hemorrhage of boomers such as myself leaving as late that there are incentives in both cash and retirement points being offered to stick around another couple of years.....And yes, I do have a DBP up to July of 2008, which now transitioned to a Cash Balance Plan. That alone caused a sunami of retirements, LOL.

Can’t run a corporation with only 20~40 something’s you know!

My plans have changed since I bought that house in the Tampa area in July. I’m not going anywhere until I have a signed contract on my home in the northern suburbs of Chicago where I’m employed, and that could be a while…….

So, at the moment I think I’m typical of most boomers. I was going to leave in April but unless I can sell my house, at a reasonable price, I ain’t going nowhere!

I work for a police department. Most everyone retires around 50-55 because we get an incredible retirement package. Thank god we don't pay into social security too. Boomers gonna bleed that dry in the next decade.

There's only a couple of guys that are in their 50's and I'd guess they'll want/need to work until they can collect on Social Security. Our company offers no pension.

No one in their 60s? We have many in their 60s... and they started back when there was a defined benefit pension.

But they still won't fvckin leave.

Why would you want them to leave?

Someone in his '60s is a lot more valuable to the company than a fresh-out-of-school schmuck.

What a neat binary world you live in where everyone is either in their 60s or a fresh out of school schmuck.

BTW, Cleo has it right on why I want at least some of them to leave. No one in our IT group has been promoted since the last time a boomer retired two years ago.

just came back from a professional development today, and there was a late boomer lady in our group...

and all she kept saying was that junior staff need to respect rank.

and then she got all mad when i was like, "Who the hell are you, lady?"

it was an interpersonal communications seminar.

** rank. I'd estimate a good one-third of the boomers where I work are a waste of space and only continue to exist in the organization because of the patronage of their fellow boomers.

Show some respect - you'll be a waste of space some day too.
