my so was told to come back to embassy 1 day before his visa pickup to bring in his old passport. Any suggestions on y they would need it they said it was no problem they just want to see it. We will give it to them no hesitation just wonder y they came up with this right before we are to get our visa.

No idea, other than perhaps there is something in renewed passport that they want to compare, or perhaps compare prior trips to those indicated in paperwork.

What country are we talking about?? Your profile and timelines lack vital details like visa filed for, country, etc.
