U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's administration will offer Israel a "nuclear umbrella" against the threat of a nuclear attack by Iran, a well-placed American source said earlier this week. The source, who is close to the new administration, said the U.S. will declare that an attack on Israel by Tehran would result in a devastating U.S. nuclear response against Iran.

What would be the point?

1. Israel will likely know if and when Iran is capable and ready to launch a nuclear weapon in its direction.

2. When that moment arrives, any Iranian launch site would suffer a massive airstrike, to try and prevent a nuclear situation occurring.

3. In the event Israeli preventative action failed, Tehran would disappear in a burst of instant sunshine.

Israel, for those unaware of the fact, is ranked as the sixth most powerful nuclear nation on the planet. They're perfectly capable of massive retaliation on their own, without any American help. Let's hope it never gets anywhere near that stage. Because we were very close in 1973, and dodged the bullet.
