Hello. I have a question concerning adjustment of status.

I am a resident of the state of Wisconsin. There is a USCIS office in Milwaukee. Am I able to send my I485 application and supporting documents there or am I obligated to send them to Chicago? I looked online and although I can't find anything that says you can file through Milwaukee, it does show that they are processing applications that are much more recent than the Chicago office. Has anyone filed previously through Milwaukee? Does anyone have any advice? Also, how long does it take for the working papers to be processed? Additionally, my fiance studied in the states two years ago and while here he worked as a teaching assistant. He does have an ITIN number. Can this be used as the social security number?

Thank you so much for your help. I greatly appreciate it.

You file everything through the Chicago Lockbox which gets sent to Missouri for some processing, and then it is sent to your district office which would be Milwaukee I'm assuming from your post. You will go to the interview at your district office. What you need to do is find out what is your district office for where you live. I think you can get this information on uscis.gov

ITIN is not a social security number; I'm not sure what you are asking when you say if the ITIN can be used as a social security number... Maybe some more details of what you are trying to do/want to do with it and why you think you need a SSN would help.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for wholeness and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart"

Your timeline does not state whether your fiance has actually entered the US with his K-1 Visa or not. He can apply for a SSN with a K-1 Visa at your local SSA office two weeks after entering the U.S. (to make sure he's in their system).

You cannot use an ITIN number instead of a SSN.

If the ITIN number doesn't work as a SSN, do we have to wait 2 weeks after the marriage to get his SSN and then file the I485? He is coming literally right before the wedding.

You generally have to wait for two weeks after coming into the country to get an SSN, their system takes that long to get updated with your arrival info.

You do not require a SSN to file for AOS. You just wait till you get the marriage certificate.

melodydb,

It seems very clear to me - in dark bold letters on the I-485 introduction page on the USCIS web site

Family-Based Applications

Where to File:

The introduction pages are always more current than the form instructions themselves since the forms are re-printed only every few years. Always read the introduction page for the latest information.

THANK YOU Yodrak!

People: you really, really need to read the uscis.gov instructions in addition to anything you find here at vj or elsewhere.

The forms have the wrong fee information and the wrong mailing information.

I feel like this question has come up SO many times in the past week.
