Proof that one is SINGLE

There are marriage certificates, and divorce decrees....

Is there a such a thing as a "single" certificate for USCitizens?

I was reading in a separate forum where someone was advised to get a certificate stating that they were single, because the pictures they were planning on showing at the K-1 interview were engagement ceremony pics and they were afraid of them being mistaken for marriage pictures...

If "single" certificates do exist in the USA, how does one go about obtaining one?

Just curious.

Yes, I was reading this on the "Candle for Love" forum.

I was just wondering how a USCitizen gets a single certificate since I have never heard of them here in the USA>

Typically one is only needed if the US citizen will marry in China, they get one at a US consulate in China, or they can get a document from their local health department in the USA that indicates this, and they then get it certified by a Chinese consulate in the USA.

US citizen does not need to provide one for a K-Visa interview in China, only the Chinese citizen needs to provide one.

I had to get one to get married in Albania. It's called a Certifikate Lindjeje dhe Lirie Per T'U Martuar, or for the simple folk who don't speak fluent Albanian (99% of the population), it translate to Certificate of freedom to marry. It basically said I wasn't married and named the person I intended to marry.

Cost me $40 cash at the American consulate in Tirana. Worth every penny.

In the United STATES of America, marriage is the the responsibility of individual STATES. Whatever else you have been told, there is no official US Government certificate of single status or "cenomar" if you will. When such a document is required for of a US Citizen by a foreign government, they have prescribed a procedure for a US Citizen to jump through their hoops to their satisfaction. Sometimes there are multiple possibilities including documentation that can be provided by a US Consulate. They are essentially sworn affidavits from the Citizen with Consular attestation.

Only in countries with central government registration of marriages, can a true CENOMAR be obtained and then only for that country's citizens and marriages registered in that country. No such registry exists in the USA and no such international registry exists that could confirm you didn't get married last month in another country.

So, in short, if you need something like that as a US Citizen, start out at the website of the US Consulate in that country. They'll have information on what you need to marry. If you aren't marrying abroad, I can't think of a reason you would ever need one.

My husband have this no record on file for marriage (before our wedding). He got it from the state registrar.

I promise to love you in good times and in bad, with all I have to give and all that I am, in the only way I know how -- completely and forever......

Most places in USA only a court can declare a person single
