waspy? what's that?

I started the thread because natty PMed me asking if it's a brazilian thing to think pearls are for old women and I said I can't talk about other people, but I think pearls are ugly.

Then i was curious if it was a cultural thing or a preference thing.

WASP is an acronym for White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. Waspy is kind of like "preppy".

Pearls to me say country club and yachting. I personally would never wear them.

now look what got started ...

Who me? :innocent:

Appears that Michelle Obama wears pearls. Is this an indication that she is considered a Wasp?

I was not intending to offend. TO ME, it's a waspy look. That doesn't mean I think everyone who wears pearls is a wasp - indeed, you probably don't have to show a WASP card when you purchase a set of pearls. It's just a style that I personally do not like.

Oh ok, I thought your wife was a big fan of pearls and you were offended because I called her a wasp (not that there's anything wrong with that ;) )!

Having been on a yacht or to a country club does not a wasp make. I think the whole wasp thing may be a New England thing. Think Charlotte from Sex and the City.

But anyway, JMHO about pearls.

I have a set of black pearls and strand of irregular sized one strung between non precious gem beads. I think I have a standard white set somewhere...

I think I depends on how you wear them. Long mixed colored strand paired with a black tank top and dark jeans is a modern take on the outdated Chanel suit with white pearls. I've never been a fan of pearls on a bride but to each there own.

Oh, and I'm a Wasp. Got my martini shaker and riding helmet to prove it.

There are LOADS of pearl combinations out there that have anything but a 'classic' look to them (ie single strand strung one right after the other). I own a pearl (fake) necklace that is 60 inches long with the occasional pearl interspaced.

I'm getting the impression that many classic styles of dress would be considered WASP to you, Jenn, if you consider pearls to be 'WASP-y.'

Which is a classless expression, btw.

I'm not a great fan of pearls by themself however I don't mind them when they are within pieces of jewellery. My shoes for my wedding have a diamante/pearl encrusted buckle so I might try and get some jewellery to match.
