Translation of docs from foreign language to english... mandatory?

hey guys,

my husband and i are starting the AOS package and we are doing it on our own. well i read (dont remember where) that any document that is in a foreign language other than english has to be translated to english. is this true? and if it is true how can i go about that? has anyone done translations of docs i.e. birth certificates? my husbands birth certificate is in spanish. how will i translate it? (format? lettering? paper? etc...) thanks a million!

Instructions to the forms are pretty clear.

Translations. Any document containing foreign language submitted to USCIS shall be accompanied by a full English language translation which the translator has certified as complete and accurate, and by the translator's certification that he or she is competent to translate from the foreign language into English.

ok thanks for verifying. but do you know how i go about that? can i do that? and if i could do that how is the format, etc? or do i have to go to a professional? and what is that professional called? and where could i find him/her? (court? yellow pages? immigration office? etc?) sorry for so many questions but i just want to be clear. thanks for your help

find someone who is competant in both languages.... if you qualify this can be you, family, friends, university language department...

If you are fluent in both languages, you can translate them yourself or ask anybody who can. You can find samples of translated birth certificates through Google. Here's one sample: http://www.***removed***/immigration/birth-certificate.html

Also, at the bottom of them translation, you need to add the following:

I, <translator name>, certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and <native language name> languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document entitled <document title>.

You can also find a translator who can do this for you if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself but it can be pretty expensive.
