I love the Christmas season!

First of all, I'm Catholic and the point of the season isn't lost on me, though I won't shove it onto others :) Plus, I have kids and I teach kids (18 year olds, but still kids!) so there's no way to avoid all the hooplah anyway.

But seriously, Christmas music, people doing good for others (though I wish it was a year-round thing), the tree and decorations, the happy get-togethers, baking, St. Nicholas Day, stockings, the Nutcracker.....

I never buy gifts for people out of obligation either. Because then it's not a "gift." I make quite a lot of my gifts (sewing and crocheting or baking) but really it's just us and the kids who get gifts. My other friends and family understand and most people do the same, at least, in our circle of friends.

I agree with a lot of your sentiment, and also as a fellow Christian there is a bigger point to Christmas to me too(yeah yeah I know he wasn't born on Dec 25th, who cares). I also love Christmas music, food, the gatherings, the wish for good will toward all men, giving gifts(I also am giving a lot of handmade this year). Maybe you and I should start a happy lovers of Christmas romantics group. :P I like being happy!

I have sort of a love/hate relationship with Christmas; I actually see it as two separate, only tenuously related holidays: the holy day, the Feast of Christmas, or the Mass of Christ, celebrating the birth of Christ on the one hand, and the sometimes similarly named holiday which leaves out or at best marginalizes Christ on the other. I love the Advent/Christmas/Epiphany season when the central focus is on the actual, historical, earthy birth of Christ. Love the music, the family gatherings, gift exchanging, putting up and decorating the tree on Christmas Eve, and most especially the worship services and singing in the choir.

But take out the Jesus center, and the season falls flat for me. Don't really see the point of the "Season's Greetings" ("Hello, it's Winter") kind of sentiment which avoids, and even seems embarrassed by, the Nativity. When it's about little more than "cheer," the once-a-year encouraging people to be decent to each other, "the children" (instead of "the Child"), or nostalgia, it just seems hollow to me. Last week, we were doing some Christmas shopping at the mall near us, and went in one of those Christmas stores. One of the songs playing was "Toy Land," sung, I think, by Perry Como. I know it's supposed to make you feel all warm and fuzzy, but it just made me feel a bit sad and empty...

A rabbi recently said to my Pastor, "CHRISTIANS!! Get a hold of your holy days!!!" :P

My favorite secular Christmas song, which sums up my feelings about the holiday w/o Jesus, is Tom Leher's Christmas Carol:

I like holiday seasons, but Christmas means nothing to me as a non-religious person.

It's wonderful to spend time with beloved ones at this time of a year, but I don't agree to the idea of buying presents more than necessary.
