I don't understand why people over 45-50 want to have kids. I undertand they want children and finally have the opportunity to have one but it just seems really selfish and they need to think about the kid in the long run when they're not around anymore.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

People are living longer, healthier lives than was possible 20-30 years ago. Why is it no problem if a man f%^ks around until he is 40-50 years old, stringing along women during their most fertile years, then decides 'I want to settle down' and finds women his age are too old to have kids so finds a 25-year-old from <insert country>, or divorces his 40something wife, marries a 25 year old(foreign or USC) and starts a second family? Why shouldn't women also have the ability to start a family when they are in the say 40-55 year old range when they have matured mentally, had the chance to travel and get an education and be more secure financially? It is harder and harder financially to start a family when you are in your 20s and 30s. Maybe 70 is pushing it but why shouldn't a healthy 45-55 year old woman be less able to have her first child than a 45-55 year old man?

Maybe 70 is pushing it...

Yeah, I think that is the whole point though.

Check it out. According to the CIA Factbook, the average life expectancy for an Indian woman is 71.9 years. She's in god's waiting room for her country and gender.

70 is NUTS, and selfish, and creepy

but 45??? I don't think there's anything wrong with that.......I had my daughter at 40, so probably a bit biased.

I guess in your 20's you imagine 40 as ancient...lol :P

The problem is when the kid hit 10 years old. She's 80 and could croak any minute. And, working at 80 years to old to support the kid another story. She'll run out of energy soon. Even in Cambodia, this is taboo.

I don't think it's selfish. Everyone is entitled to the life they want. Only those who desire children so much and cannot have them can tell you really how it feels, to not be able to procreate.

A child could be born to a 20s - 30s parents. It does not guarantee that the parents will live long enough to see their children graduate from anything.

I am sure those older women in the story have large family units who can take care of these children, when they are gone. The family tree lives on (that is important to some people - to leave a legacy, to leave a mark of you in the world) To some - to die without leaving a part of you in the world may just as well mean you were born for nothing.

As for the children - they have already been born, they are lucky to be alive. Their lives are worth it. Do you think when they grow up they will regret being born? They are individuals who will grow up as such, regardless of whether they lose their parents in a car crash 2 years after they were born, to a heart attack, to cancer........life is not guaranteed.

It just like gay rights. A right given to one should not be denied to another.

I have a question..........since to some bringing a child to life in such circumstances is selfish. Should the Sudanese in Dafur be viewed as selfish to continue to give birth to children whose life expectancy is minimal on the average? Should these Dafur parents consider that these children will soon be dying of malnutrition, disease, hunger, poverty etc?

I don't think the women there have a real choice in the matter since rape is rampant.

Are you saying that all those hundreds of thousands of children are rape children? The Dafur people are families as well. Full family units.
