in my understanding, your visa (if you entered on an immigrant visa) should serve as a "temporary I-551 evidencing permanent residence for 1 year." this is what i am reading on my husband's visa that is stamped in his passport. also, the immigration officer at the POE stamped his passport with the arrival date, class of CR1 and the date of when his conditional residence would expire. the officer also wrote down his "A" number on the passport.

so, since you already have your SSN, go ahead and apply for jobs, open a bank account, etc. you don't need a welcome letter or the physical green card right now as the I-551 is valid for 1 year from the date of your entry..

somebody pls correct me if i'm wrong.. but this is how i understand it..

Dear All,

My POE was Nov 28th and until now I dont even receive welcome letter.

hey all, guess what? my husband's SS card AND green card arrived in the mail today!

and of course, just as i feared, the middle initial is wrong!!! now what.. i guess i'm gonna have to call USCIS again monday..

question: on his SSC, it didn't have his middle name or his suffix of the third (III). is this going to make a difference? should we correct this? but then everything should match, shouldn't it?

Wow, i am so happy for you and i am praying that i have mine by next week so that i can start doing something about my life plan. so i congratulate you.

Just got our welcome letters and we have been here since October 26. According to the USCIS, it was only on November 18th that the POE sent our packets to their office which meant that the 30 day period to receive the green cards will end on December 18th. Hopefully, we will get our GCs next week!

My husband entered the US on December 4, 2008. We just got his social security card in the mail today December 15, 2008. But we didn't get a welcome letter yet. And my hubby was told at the POE that the green card will take 6-8 months to get here. But I know someone who got their green card in the mail in less than 3 weeks from entry.

Your Green card and SS card come from two different agencies. I would suggest you go to the SSN office and check to see if you are in the system and if not, apply for it then! here is the web site so you can see your locate SS office http://www.ssa.gov/

Also once you receive your welcome letter you can register on USCIS web site for updates on your status when you can expect your Green Card. They told me it takes 30 days or more from date it states on your letter. Good Luck! Call USCIS http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis if you want more details about your status ok... Have patiences it's coming!!!

Good Luck

Are you sure your husband heard correctly? I think it's more likely they said 6-8 WEEKS

I think most people on the forum get theirs within 1-2 months

Sorry. It took me a while to get back.

I looked at my passport. the immigration officer at the POE stampled my pp with the arrival date and class of CR1. the rest is hardly readable coz the stamp is not clear. I dont think she has written any A number on my pp. But on the visa stamped by the embassy on the right handside, second from the top... it says "Registration Number". I am guessing that is the actual alien registratin number. Can u please match the number written by the immigration officer at poe and the registration number stamped on visa? Your help will be appreciated.

thanks

PS: I got my SSN back in 2001 when i was in the US as a student.

in my understanding, your visa (if you entered on an immigrant visa) should serve as a "temporary I-551 evidencing permanent residence for 1 year." this is what i am reading on my husband's visa that is stamped in his passport. also, the immigration officer at the POE stamped his passport with the arrival date, class of CR1 and the date of when his conditional residence would expire. the officer also wrote down his "A" number on the passport.

yeah my hubby said 6-8 months. but when we made an infopass appointment, we asked the USCIS and they said usually it takes 6-8 months because of the work log but usually it will take 2 months at the most.
