new deodorant helps reduce underarm hair growth

Hands up any woman who's ever forgotten to shave her armpits.

Well . . . OK, on second thoughts, maybe not.

Such embarrassing moments could be a thing of the past with the creation of a deodorant which promises to slow hair growth.

The Sure and Dove Hair Minimising roll-ons and sprays, both manufactured by Unilever, will go on sale next month.

They are being billed as the first deodorants which noticeably slow down the speed of hair growth.

Unilever believes they will be particularly popular with image-conscious young women and it expects up to a third of its customers to switch to the new varieties. This would generate £10million in sales in the first year alone.

Although the deodorants are not designed to replace waxing or shaving, it is claimed that they will reduce the skin irritation caused by hair regrowing afterwards.

Unilever claimed that women will notice a difference after around four weeks of use.

Their underarm hair should be less noticeable, finer and easier to remove. However, hair growth will quickly return to normal if they stop using the deodorant.

Sian Jenkins of Dove said: ' Consumer testing has shown that women notice a difference to their underarms after just a few weeks - shaving time off their normal regime.'

Murray Bisschop of Unilever told The Grocer magazine: 'This gives women an advanced added beauty benefit that no other deodorant currently offers.'

The company's scientists have spent three years developing the new formula.

It is based on a 'pro-epil' complex-which is said to slow the rate of hair growth.

Acknowledging that some people will have safety concerns about chemicals strong enough to slow hair growth, Mr Bisschop said: 'It is critically important for Unilever not to launch anything that is potentially risky.'

The deodorants should be used only in the underarm area, he added.

The repugnance with which our society treats hairy armpits is a relatively recent development --dating from around the 1920s.

Research shows that we are quick to judge women with underarm hair, viewing them as unfriendly, immoral and aggressive.

Women sporting the natural look are also seen as bossy, dominant and non-conformist - but brighter than average.

Julia Roberts discovered just how much society frowns on armpit fuzz when she displayed her hairy underarms at the London premiere of her film Notting Hill in 1999.

The actress, who is thought to have cultivated the look to please her boyfriend of the time, said later: 'You'd think it was a chinchilla I had under there the way the world responded.'

shaving the pits is so annoying. i work out so much i opted for laser hair removal because i would get razor burn about every other time i shaved them. i'd probably try this if i needed it.
