To my Filipino Floridian friends and your loved ones,

Please join me, an ex-Florida resident of Filipino ancestry, in extending congratulations to the Florida Gators football team and its quarterback, Tim Tebow. As you know, Tim was born in the Philippines and he might win the Heisman trophy again for the second consecutive year. And let's pray and hope that the Gators defeats the Oklahoma Sooners for the national championship. (My Okie friends might offer a contradiction to this!)

Since this is a sports thread with Filipino theme, congrats to Tim Lincecum. a pitcher for the SF Giants who was the 2008 National League Cy Young winner. his grandfather is Filipino.

Yeah, you're right, Roy. Lincecum is good, he deserves the NL Cy Young award. I first noticed him last year in a game that he pitched against the Dodgers and I thought he delivered the ball a la Orel Hershiser.

There's also another Giant who is a Filipino. He is Geno Espineli, a full-blooded Filipino who was born in Houston and now lives in Austin, and he is a left handed reliever for San Francisco. He was also named to the U.S. Olympic baseball team but was unable to go to Beijing because he was called by the Giants.

My friends, do you know some more athletes of Filipino ancestry who have excelled in American sports?

after looking at the list, sorry to stray from the sports theme, but on memorable performance, Phobe Cates in the pool scene from Fast Times at Ridgemont High...

(that list seems pretty complete to me... and lots of other big names outside of the sports section which isn't that big).

Wonder why Marita Redondo of tennis fame is not on Wiki's list. Marita was one of Chris Evert's most formidable American rivals in the 70s and she was a close friend of my wife when we lived in San Diego.

Yeah, Phoebe in that scene was memorable indeed! :star:

Also memorable are the scenes where Annie Cruz and Charmaine Star are featured.

Kudos to Tim Tebow! My fiance says that the quarterback of the winning team in the national championship (either Tebow of Fla. or Bradford of Okla.) will raise the Heisman trophy. Furthermore, he says that the Sooners will beat the Gators by a field goal. My fiance ain't an Okie but close, he is from Sante Fe, New Mexico. :star:
