There is a different form to fill out if you are living outside Canada or residing in Canada. Fill out the one you need, because the main difference is who can vouch for your photographs (the guarantor list is different).

If you are back in Canada, and can drop it off at an office and pay the fees, it can take a couple weeks or less. Otherwise, you have to mail it off, and it can be gone awhile (I think mine was close to 2 months). The bottom line is that you send your old passport off, so there is a period where you will not have your passport and thus cannot travel via airplanes out of the US. I remember I took mine in person in Ontario, thinking it would be quick, but they couldn't guarantee it within the week, and I needed to fly home at the end of the week, so I was out of luck.

Sending off the old passport/leaving you a period without a passport isn't a very good system, but that is what they were still operating off of early last year.

Apparently you can pay a chunk of cash for expedite and have it in 5 business days if you are getting it in Canada.

I phoned the Canadian consulate recently and asked them a few questions about it. They sent me out an application form- If I want to apply for it in the US it will take a while. A few months I believe.

Mine expires in August but I'm already thinking about it.

I was happy to find out I can get Canadian passport pics in the US. I asked at my local Walgreens and they said there is a Country option button on the machine that will convert the pics to the size they need to be by Country.

I filed for my passport from the US last February. I couriered the application and all of the attachments to the Passport Office in Quebec and in less than 10 days I had my new passport in my hand, also couriered back. It won't take you several months but it may take a bit longer now as there is a need for everyone entering the States from Canada to have a passport by June, 2009 and the workload may pick up.

You have several options: a) you can use the Canadians in the US passport application form which allows you to use the new guarantor requirements;

b ) you can use the old passport form and use the old guarantor requirements and send it from the US;

c) if you are going to be in Canada for a while you can use the in Canada form, hand deliver it to a Passport Office and have it mailed back to a Canadian address.

you can find all the information you need at the Canadian Passport website: http://www.ppt.gc.ca/cdn/index.aspx

Make sure you provide the correct photographic size and criteria if you are in the US - that is the number one reason why US submitted applications are rejected.
