Unable to attend IR2 interview...how long will petition be held open?

I have a question about my son's IR2 petition and how long it can be "postponed" or held open before it is closed for whatever reason.

Here's the scenario. I received the interview appointment for my son in October which I moved to November so I could fly to Manila and be with him for the interview. I have all the supporting documents regarding our relationship like copies of letters, pictures, etc, since he does not have any. Apparently he doesn't even know where a single letter or picture is (except 1) - but that's another story.

He is 18 and like 18 year olds who have issues (don't we all?) we found out one week before the interview date that he dropped all his courses in college and - he ran away. He has been "spotted" living with friends but hasn't exactly been "found" and returned home.

I did postpone the interview and because I had no set date to postpone the November date to, the rep at the Manila consulate said that I should call in December and ask for a January date. Since my son obviously doesn't want to be found, or be in the US (for now) - I really don't know what to do with his petition since he hasn't responded to my calls, email, or my dad's (where he was living during college) either.

So how long is it before this particular case/petition will be considered closed? I don't want to just close the door on him - maybe he'll change his mind in a month or so. But for now, I don't know what to do, what forms to fill out, who to talk to at the consulate, etc.

Any help is greatly greatly appreciated. I'm just too confused about what to do next...

thanks!
