Isn't the Department of State and NVC the samething? or they have two different purposes?

I dont really know. I know they have two different phone numbers to call. From my experience, when I didnt get someone rude at DOS to tell me that I needed to call NVC because they have my case, they seemed to be a little bit more informative than NVC about what was going on..

Isn't the Department of State and NVC the samething? or they have two different purposes?

National Visa Center (NVC): A private company located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire that processes certain immigration filings under contract with the U.S. Department of State (DOS). In appropriate cases, NVC receives approved green card petitions from USCIS or DOS and continues the green card process by sending forms and instructions to the applicant, receiving the forms and supporting documents back from the applicant, and then forwarding the applicant’s file to the proper U.S. embassy or consulate abroad.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS): An agency of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) responsible for ruling on immigration and naturalization matters and establishing immigration policies and priorities. USCIS was formerly called the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and was part of the U.S. Department of Justice. On March 1, 2003, INS transitioned into DHS. Thus, INS no longer exists.

USCIS functions include adjudication of immigrant visa petitions, adjudication of naturalization petitions, adjudication of asylum and refugee applications, adjudications performed at the service centers, and all other adjudications formerly performed by the INS.

Department of State (DOS)

* Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM). PRM is responsible for formulating policies on population, refugees, and migration, as well as administrating US refugee assistance and admission programs.

* Bureau of Consular Affairs (CA): CA interprets visa laws and regulations and serves as a liaison between the Department of State and overseas embassies and consulates on visa matters. Oversight of visa policy now rests within DHS. Consular officials issue visas and passports and provide services to US citizens abroad.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

I'm just dropping in to say hi to everyone - both newcomers, who I hope will get out of the NVC hell as soon as possible, as well as the old folks, who are still hanging around.

I've not forgotten about this place - it's just that I've been busy finalizing work and school-related business (if everything goes well, I'll be graduating from college this Friday, or, if that fails, a week after that). So.. as soon as those things are done and over with, I'll be back fully.

I was put in AP on June 9. I personally called everyday, except for maybe 2 days. Yes, it was heartbreaking to hear you are still in AP but I just couldnt help it. I had to feel like I was doing something productive in the matter. Called DOS Friday morning and spoke to the rude lady that told me Im still early in the game basically and that AP normally takes 3 months or more (this news almost sent me home from work early, I was devastated). Called NVC Friday evening and was advised package went out Wednesday June 24th. So with my experience dont listen to what some have to say there at DOS (always different answers), keep calling everyday if you want, you never know when it's your day! I pray this fast turn around keeps up with NVC. Good luck to those still there. I will be praying you get out soon..

Thank God you had this thread :)

The 3 month timeline is for post interview AP(which is what DOS is normally getting calls about)

I was in "AP" for 11 days. It was sent to the Embassy and received this morning.

Thats great! congrats and im glad your time wasnt long

"you fondle my trigger then you blame my gun"

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

Just dropping in to say hi.... I used to be a regular on this thread, was stuck 50 days in AP back in Jan/Feb/March.

I see some of the old-timers are here: hi Lisa, cdneh, Talyss, and Badgerella!

Sorry to see people still getting stuck in AP, but glad to see that the wait times really seem to be shorter than they were.

Well, I just wanted to update folks of some good news....

we finally had our embassy interview, and we PASSED!!! My fiancee Thanti had a straightforward interview, after all the hassle we had at NVC and then getting Packet 3/4 at the embassy in Bangkok. She'll pick up her passport with the K-1 visa on Wed, board a flight on Thursday night, arrive in Chicago on Friday morning, and be here with me in time for fireworks on the 4th of July on Saturday. So, things do have a way of working out well in the end if you're patient. Need lots and lots of patience.

Also a head's up .. another veteran of AP@NVC, Mike (girarm) was stuck for 38 days, and his fiancee is having her interview in Bangkok literally RIGHT NOW (8 AM BKK time Tues morning). Hope she gets her visa too!!!!

Keep the faith, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

BTW - for those not aware of it, I built a website to track the AP@NVC statistics. You can see it by clicking the link at the bottom of my signature (below the scary messy commie thing, just ignore that :P ).

You may find it useful to track your progress.

Unfortunately it doesn't refresh automatically, I never got around to doing that.

So it needs to be refreshed manually. You can do so by going to http://apnvc.info/vjcron.pl . Your browser will spin for about 10 seconds, and then tell you it has a "500 Internal Server error". Just ignore that. Next time you go to the regular site http://apnvc.info, the statistics will have been updated.

I note that there are now only 14 names on the K1 "stuck" list <55 days (I ignore those over 55 days since they probably didn't fill in their timelines correctly).

And there are only 4 K3s "stuck".

This is much, much less than there was back in March when we had many more stuck people.

Good luck all!
