Should Someone Who Lies About Their Education Be Fired?

I would say definitely yes, since it's an ethical concern.

However, after the person is fired, the educational requirements of the position should be revisited. If someone without that education was able to do the job, it would appear someone overstated the educational requirement.

I think many times the educational requirement is only a way to weed out applicants rather than an implication that it really takes a certain level of educational experience to perform the job function.

A conversation came about after reading about a VP of a company who was outed for saying he had a masters degree when he in fact never even had a bachelors! Do you think someone should be fired if it is found out much after hiring that they lied about their education? Even if they have been doing a great job?

If your effectiveness in your position is a direct result of the faith and trust others have in your word, then yes.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Doing a great job as a VP for a company means making lots of money for that company. Question is, how did someone find out, did the person that found out get teed off by this VP?

Regarding firing the guy, my answer is yes if that particular position requires a particular degree, license, certification, or other credentials. If so, the company can be sued royally in the event of some kind of liability suit where his position can cause death or injury to the public. On the other hand, if no such conditions exist, it's up to his CEO and board to make a determination. This question can get complicated without specific details.

In light of this board and it's primary function, is this VP here legally, immigration wise?

exactly my thoughts. The position of VP is a very trusted position. People will largely follow your lead because they assume you have a lot more worldly knowledge without having to explain every last detail. You assume that they know better given their training, pedigree and education.

i think not. degrees don't guarantee a good job performance any more than experience.

Yes, absolutely. It is misrepresentation. Shouldnt grunt workers be fired as well for the same offense? Is the question just because they are a VP?

Maybe I am misunderstanding those who think it shouldnt be a fireable offense, but if someone says they have a certain credential - and lie about it, it has nothing to do with them being a good leader. The VP should have sold themselves to the company based on facts, not lies. One caveat is if in a nationwide company - they wanted to promote someone who the local peeps KNEW did not have the necessary background, and the national peeps found out later - well thats a stickier situation.

isn't the reason they request people to have a degree in order to be hired an insurance that the person will do a good job performance? I'd take someone with a high school degree and 10 years in the business over a fresh out of the college know nothing but what's in the books person.

ojk insurance is not the word, assurance? blah!

But the probelm (i believe) is that they lied on a requirement for the position. Anything to get the job is ok?

it's not their fault their boss is incompetent and didn't check their background. And you can;t blame the guy for omitting a little detail to get a good job.

Was he hired based somewhat on the education that he put on his resume?

Was his education level required for the job he is doing?

Was that a major deciding factor for hiring him?

IF YES THEN:

I would have to say yes, how many other people with the proper education applied for that job and didn't get it because someone who could lie well got in. Not exactly fair.

Yes very true too actually!

Hmm. Fire both the boss and him! :P

He supposedly said he had a masters, yet never had a bachelors. That is not a little detail to me.

it would be a little detail if they said they were a doctor or something, that really requires more education, but to do adminstrative work, i don't think so.
