I know this has been brought up before but I really didn't pay attention back then.

What is UP with mena men not liking women to smoke???? I've recently started smoking again ( i know i know......long story and only 2 a day ) and last night I got caught. I've been pretty good at hiding it but somehow he freakin' knew how many butts were in the butt can and which one was mine. He was all HARAM HARAM, though he let me continue when I lit up while he was saying HARAM HARAM. I was pointing out that he himself smokes and it's not haram it's that other word I forget all the time.

I don't wanna get into a religious discussion of whether it's haram or not but what the heck.......finally when he had no more arguments left he just outright said, "WOMEN should not smoke, smoking is for MEN!". When I asked him to show me where it states that in the Quran he just grunted and went downstairs to his "manroom".

I just am intrigued more than anything now. Of course i won't stop because of what he said since he's so wicked zexy when he's all mad n stuff  but I want to know where this idea of smoking only being for men started. It's obviously not a religious thing so is it historically cultural? Is it just Egyptian men? I ask that because I can remember when I was in Cairo with hubby and a friend of his we were at Khan Khali and the friend kept making that sucking of the teeth sound when he saw some women smoking shisha and when I asked what the problem was he said "women should not be smoking it is shameful".

Again I've always blown this off (no pun intended) because I wasn't smoking so it didn't pertain to me but now that it does it just pizzes me off.

I think its truly a chauvinistic thing and not just MENA related. My father is the same way with women and tattoos. He goes nuts...its trashy, "unlady like", etc. Yet he has 5!!!

My husband does not smoke cigs...(strange for an Egyptian) but he does puff the sheesha! He doesn't mind when I do, matter of fact we do it together while chilling out in our backyard watching the stars. It's relaxing. He would mind if I smoked cigs though. Not because of women/men thing but because he HATES the ciggy smell.

Anyway, thats my story and I'm sticking to it. :P

Do you do it in public where other people can see you? Maybe that's his problem, the "What will the neighbors think?" thing.

We have two sheesha pipes in our home, one for my husband and one for me. He takes me to sheesha cafes all the time. If it's sheesha, it's okay. Not cigarettes, though. I have to sneak those (shhhhhhhhhhhhh!). He doesn't like me smoking cigarettes and he doesn't know I'm back to it. At least I think he doesn't. If he does he hasn't said anything. He's never run the "haram" line on me but he really doesn't like it. I suspect it's because he used to smoke himself, but I've never asked him why because why isn't that big of a deal. What is a big deal is making sure all of the butts get flushed down the toilet and none hang around in the toilet bowl to tell on me. :)

In Ghana it is a definite no-no for women to smoke. If you do see a woman smoking she is called (1) a foreigner or (2) loose/prostitute/disrespectful/useless.

I won't do it in public I just do it in his manroom which is also the new smoking room ever since the weather got colder. I guess I'll just have to be more cautious if I don't want him all upset, though seriously seeing him get so worked up over it was a total turn on for some really sick and twisted reason.

I dream of the day we can do the shisha thing on the porch together but now I'm thinking that's just never gonna happen. :crying:

Wait a bit and talk to him about it. Tell him its only btwn you and him, no one is around and it would be fun to share and relaxing. But wait till he's calmer....

well I was smoking when I met my husband in Morocco

I definitely knew what times I could smoke and not and who to smoke around and who not, if I didnt already know I learned real quick

Not a problem that I smoke, one reason, I think, so he can bum cigarettes off of me

I still need to get a sheesha....where on earth do you get the stuff to smoke in it???

However I can attest to the men not wanting others to see "their" wife in a certain light

HUMPKIN PUMPKIN...."that sucking of the teeth sound???"

You mean other guys do this too??:P

I would insist that if it's an issue of what other people would think if they saw you, then he should not smoke in public either. What is good for the goose is good for the gander.

Him being able to smoke but you not being allowed to is just not fair, and I wouldn't put up with that!

But smoking is bad for you anyway.
